I knew a woman with a dog similar to this, except it was a little more corgi-looking. I tried to suggest there might be corgi in its background, but she was very adamant that it was a german shepherd mixed with a golden retriever.

There is "dwarfism" in GSD's, & that is what I believe the dog in the picture to be. They do not carry the traditional double coat, more of a soft hair coat, & the coat can be quite thin in areas.

I'm still leaning towards pituitary dwarfism, but with all the wierd mixes out there that people are doing on purpose, it wouldn't surprise me if it is just going to be the latest fad for the hollywood set.
Pituitary dwarfs are not that deformed - more normal structure with smaller size and a wealth of health problems in the GSD. See pictures at bottom of 2nd article showing chondroplastic dwarf.
I just pasted this but I have seen several other pictures of pituitary dwarfs as they are not as uncommon as the chondroplastic dwarfs (this was the first I heard of them so did some research). The Lanting articles are pretty interesting and he would be a credible source for such.

I was not familiar with the chondroplastic dwarf, but I agree that this is definetly that type. You know, it makes total sense. Thanks for posting the links! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
THe first pic is not a dwarf. It looks like gsd/basset hound cros to me. I have seem several dogs crossed with bassets. one looked EXACATLY like a black lab but in the body of the basset. Makes me kind of sad actually...not sure why. This dog seems to be happy.
There is NO doubt after the last breeding I did with one of my males to an outside female that small dogs CAN and DO breed large dogs. This female would lay down and not want to get up and my male actually layed on top of her on the ground to 'do it'. Couldn't believe it. The ended up with 2 breedings standing but they certainly could have had a tie laying down!
