Hi everyone, got a problem. My puppy Kane (4 mo) which some of you have already heard of has gotten diarrhea. This started last night. I read Eds article on diarrhea. It seems to be the brown water diarrhea. Poor thing I crated him last night around 11:00 and this morning he went before I could let him out. Although he did back up to the door and manage to squirt it out of the crate. It wasnt fresh when I let him out this morning but as soon as I let him out he went again... not a lot but still watery. I am not going to feed him today but he does seem to be drinkinh plenty of water. Now I know if I cant get it under control by tonight he needs to go to the vet right?
Under the article for brown water diarrhea it doesnt say what can cause this or what do do other than give water and pedialyte, and no food. Under pudding diarrhea it says a fews things that can cause it and to give canned pumpkin, and over the counter diarrhea med. Will this work in Kanes condition as well?
He hasnt gotten into the garbage and hasnt eaten anything unusal. But yesterday my 1 yr old son threw down a 1/2 tortilla with beans in it. Kane inhaled it before I could do anything. Could this be the problem or is it something else?
Please if anyone has any ideas or advice I would greatly appreciate it... I only have until this evening to try to get it under control!

I forgot to say that he has not received any vaccinations recently. I was going to take him in for his rabies this weekend, but he hasnt had any recently. Just thought that was important for you all to know.

lol yes, half a tortilla with beans could definately set him off!
Give him some canned pumpkin, don't feed him normal food today, and by tomorrow or the next day he should be back to normal.
This sounds familiar...a friend of ours decided to give Cassie a ham sandwich. An adult friend. Who was a vet tech. She was pretty sick for a couple of days, but the pumpkin works miracles. I really have to say that it's better than giving Pepto or any other actual medicine!

High water content/low solids diarrhea is caused by pathogens, not dietary change. Feed restriction can make the problem worse by decreasing the rate of turn-over in intestinal lining.

Thanks for the info. Chad Im not sure I follow you? Are you saying that I shouldnt keep food from him?
My friend said its good that at least he wants to eat, because if not or if he was lethargic it good be bad like Parvo, but he has the energy, and he wants to eat.(He knocked over some dog food to try to get to it)I will go and get him some canned pumpkin.
Hes pretty upset right now. He has to be outside. and usually hes inside with me all day. But since I have alot of little ones running around the house... a diarrhea accident would be a bad thing!
How soon after eating the canned pumpkin will I see any improvement??

Soryy Meghan I see where you said tomorrow or the next day he should be better... is it ok to wait that long with a puppy that has the squirts?? I was thinking if he wasnt better by tomorrow morning. Hate for the vet to take advantge of me though if its not neccesary. I know they can be money hungry!
(please no offense to those of you that are vets! Not that all of you are that way... just some.)

I've always found that feeding mine when they're sick just makes them sick for a longer period of time...usually if I hold off on the food for a day they're 100% by the next day. But if I feed them, it might take longer before they're totally...solid...I have this happen if they get into something really good in the trash, or if they eat something really rich. Some dogs just seem to have a tougher stomach than others, too, Kane might be a little extra sensitive!
The pumpkin should makes its way through his system in 8 hours, maybe a little more...you'll see some orange poop sometimes! As long as you're 100% positive he hasn't gotten into anything harmful, then I wouldn't rush him to the vet, just watch and see if he's starting to firm up in the morning. If not then you might want to take him in, but if it passes quickly it's nothing to worry about. Just make sure he's not dehydrated and that he's acting normally.

Well I didnt get Kane the canned pumpkin, but I did notice that the diarrhea has ceased. Hes still full of energy and well hydrated. I walked him tonight and he threw up... looked like bile ? It was watery and yellowish and then was fine... is this caused from him not eating today? Should I wait for his first potty in the morning to see if its normal before I decide to feed him? Should I continue to keep up his food until it is normal or should I feed him tomorrow even if its still a little runny? Thanks for the quick advice. I was close to a panic!!!

The bile pukes comes from not eating. Give the poor bugger a biscut or something. He can eat again I would say.

If you want to be extra careful, give him half his food with some pumpkin mixed in, and at the next feeding give him his full meal, with or without pumpkin.
But he should be fine to eat again, the burrito has made its way through his system and done its worst.
