Client calls you for a working dog. Tells you that he is a policer and wants a family dog/ narc dog. You tell him that you have a young female that has outstanding ball drive , food drive, high prey drive (can not live with any cats period) So they want to come and see her Saturday . You have appointments to see her that start at 12-1pm So he wants to come at 11. you say ok. They come down and you spend 2+ hours going over the dog and bloodlines, They bring thier whipet, two small kids (one that is sort of affraid of big dogs) wife. The dog is playing fetch loving up on the kids and husband. Wife and whipet are just sitting there. Dog cuddles up to the small child that is sort of affraid and falls asleep. We bring in parents they pet and play some more . The dog goes to the wife and wants to play with the whipet at this time the dog pops her teeth (something she does with all the dogs or when wanting the ball or toy) we talk more about the needs of the dog, training class is a most, Kids need to also attend so she understand who is Alpha in the house where she is in the pecking order. I ask is this what you are wanting they say yes are you comfortable with the dog the wife says yes. We go outside for a potty break. I am standing with the husband and ask again is this what you are wanting again she is everything I was looking for, I'll be bringher to work with me and have a guy that is a trainer help me and the dog. I then start talking to the wife and ask are you comfortable with the dog she says yes, are you wanting the dog again she says yes. We then sign contract (which I fully read out loud to them (making sure they understand every thing) they sign they pay we take pictures and load the dog. We then say our good byes. He says I 'll be calling you. I say OK.
Last night he calls and says the dog snaped twice at the wife. She was doing nothing just out of the blue went after her. Now they want to bring her back for a full refund. They do not want to go and try or work with her. Period just want thier money back.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO? some of my breeder friends said ask for a restocking fee, others said refund the money and one said let them deal with it this anit no Wal mart.

if you care about the dog, get her out of there this instant and give them all their money back on the spot.
all the signs were there that the wife was not on board with this and she was being pushed into it by her husband. you picked up on that or you wouldn't have asked the wife three times if this is what she wants.
it's better to follow your gut about people than to make a sale. get the dog back and only sell her to people you feel 100 percent good about.
it doesn't matter what the truth is. all that matters is that they don't want the dog, and that puts her in jeopardy. get her out of there now.

The wife probably lied about the dog snapping at her so hubby would gey rid of it. Take the dog back so it wont be sent to the pound and pts. Save this dogs' life and take it as a learning experience.

Do what ever you need to in order to get this dog back...she is doomed if you don't.

I'm not a breeder, but he is my 2 cents:
- Get the dog back. Obviously they don't want to put the time into the dog that it needs/deserves.
- If you can convince them to pay a restocking fee, then try for it. They did waste a lot of your time and hey.... time is money. If not, give the full refund.
- Maybe look at some adjustments on the contract ie. return policy and a fee.
No sense keeping one of your babies in a house that doesn't want her.

So, how much for your scratch and dent dog <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> just kidding, Your story like almost every breeder I've talked to has convinced me to get my two spayed and give up any thought of being a breeder. It involves too much time and effort to get titles, get all the Med Docs needed, licenses and dealing with boneheads for me.
IMHO get your dog back before they decide to resell or give it away someone that wants a junkyard dog

To answer then question they came yesterday at 11 am and they return the dog today at 1045am I did take the dog back and was ready to pay the full return But I felt it was not the dog nor my fault And I did feel that I deserved to be paid something for my time on these reasons
1 I did spend 2+ hours of my time (I am a graphic designer and could of been working)
2. I did go over everything and did my part.
3 I did offer a puppy from the next litter and explained that they needed a puppy with his wife's soft temperament. He declined and said they were going to get a lab.
4. He went on and on how she is a great do and how they played ball all last night. Even told me I should personally train her to sell her to the police dept
We did come to an agreement and I was paid for my time. I do plan on adding a clause in my contract for this reason
Thank you all for your replies

Maybe look at some adjustments on the contract ie. return policy and a fee.
what is your current return policy?
just mho, but a good breeder always takes a puppy back at any time of its life if the purchaser doesn't want or can't keep it. a good breeder is responsible for that puppy the rest of its life. you brought it into the world, your responsibility: to find the pup the right home, and if you made a mistake in choosing the buyers, then you make it right for the pup.
i would not buy a pup from a breeder who does not REQUIRE pups to be returned to her if they need rehoming, no matter their age. a good breeder doesn't want a puppy of hers winding up at the pound, in rescue, or at a puppy mill or with an unscrupulous person.
so, jmho, if your contract doesn't already require the pup to be returned to you if it can't stay with the original purchaser, then you need to change your contract to state that.
why do i feel this is important? it tells me a lot about how responsible the breeder is and what is more important to her: getting the money, or the welfare of her puppies.

I can't remember but I think my breeder had a nonrefundable deposit clause in the contract I don't know if anybody else does that.

we cross posted. less than 24 hours and you want money for your time????? what if they had come and spent two hours and decided not to buy the dog, would you have expected them to pay you for your time then?
