Did not really know where to post this so hope I guessed correctly.I think this is absolutely hysterical. Nothing against the breed and I am sure they may work fine, but I can just imagine the looks on the faces of some of the "hunters" I know personally when someone let a poodle out to go bird hunting. Maybe I am just old school but please gimme a good ole high drive lab, spaniel or shorthair to go hunting with.

It's a pity that toys and minis and teacups have detracted from the public image of standards. Poodles are a retrieving breed. The name means (roughly) "water splasher."
It would be hard to find a more "old school" hunting dog than a Poodle. Their hunting history predates even firearms.

Well, Standard Poodles were originally bred as retrievers -- I think reviving those instincts would be a great idea <:-)

LOL, if you got an undocked one in black or liver & kept a short "kennel clip" on him, you could tell hunters it's a rare line of Curly Coated Retrievers <;-)

Hahah! I almost peed from laughter. I would want to see the look on his face. I've always been a "Big" dog person.. I love all animals but am not fond of poodles. This just cracked me up. Sorry, no di-respect meant to the poodle owners.. I've never owned own but my MIL did - it was the nasiest little creature I've ever come across. I guess bad expierances based my opinan.

You do know that a standard weighs about 45-70 pounds, right?
The standard next door to us, trim and athletic, weighs a pound more than my GSD.

Okay...I have to admit that I am humbled a little.....met a guy here that was hunting and using a poodle (there must be more out there than one would think and the reason I saw him was because other hunters were commenting on it so me being who I am, had to go check it out). Worked rather well actually. My preference is still a Lab but I will give credit where credit is due.....
The dog was very friendly and willing to work just as hard as our dog.
Maybe they can bring the reputation back around. I will admit to being terrorized by poodles at Grandmas house when I was young and have never really cared for them since. But this dog was one that I think I could tolerate rather well.

I would not mind hunting with one of these: http://www.vipoodle.org/docs/WPindex.html
I would DEFINITELY mind hunting with one of these: http://www.poodleclubofamerica.org/images/pca_bos_bevel.jpg
Breed splits everywhere... btw standard poodles are smart, fun, active, and probably would really hate getting primped and staying proper. I think they're truly more at home in the field and in the water, they just don't know it when groomed as a showdog. Toy poodles are slightly more intelligent than the average hamster.

I could be wrong, but I heard that the pom-pom hair-do actually originated because pooples were working water dogs and the placement of the original poms was to protect the joints in cold water, while the rest of the dog was shaved to prevent becoming ensnared in water brambles and marsh grass.I'm not a big fan of them myself but I know they're smart dogs.
Also, I love it when any breed does what it was bred to do--instead of just looking the part. Too bad for my Corgis that I don't have cattle!
