Alright, here is the scoop. I got my dog about 4 months ago from a friend who was going through a seperation with his ex and couldn't take care of the dog anymore. He knew I loved GSDs and was in the process of looking for one, and wanted to make sure he went to a good home...so here we are.
The problem is, I really want to know his history, parents hip ratings etc and possibly get his AKC paperwork. All I know are a few things:
1) The dog was purchased from a breeder in Colorado and shipped to FL about a year ago.
2) The woman's name who purchased the dog (Penny Reis)
3) She found the breeders site on the internet (so they obviously have a website).
I've started the process of emailing every breeder I can find on the internet in Colorado trying to locate the source of the dog.
The question is...can anyone think of any other ideas to go about this? Or even better, are one of you the breeder I'm trying to find? <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The dog is awesome...but I really need the peace of mind in finding out his history.
Any help / comments / suggestions are much appreciated!!!!
The dog was a gift from his ex to him for Christmas last year. It was a pretty nasty breakup from what I gather and she isn't exactly being forthcoming with information.
i sincerely hope that your qwest for hip ratings and akc registration is not an indication that you are planning to breed this fella. while he may be the most wonderful companion and pet, he is not stud material.

Ya, I would like to know too. Why would you say he is not stud material without evaluating the drive, temperament etc. Is there something physically wrong w/ him that I'm overlooking? Just curious. I'm actually not considering breeding him anyways, but I still want to know why you said that.
Nathan, I hope Ms. Powers responds to your question. I, too, would like to know how she arrived at her assessment from a photograph of a ten-month old puppy? I wonder if she would be adamant in her evaluation of the puppy if it turns out that the kennel in Colorado actually imported the puppy from Germany and your friend's ex-wife paid an arm and a leg for him? Of course, I'm not saying this is the case. I'm just saying that I think it's difficult to reach such a harsh opinion from viewing a few photographs online. Granted, if the dog had a head like a Neopolitan Mastiff, well then, maybe I could understand. He looks like a nice puppy to me. Good luck with him.

Sorry but I think its commendable of Nathan to want to find out his pets heritage & AKC rating. I don't recall him saying anything about wanting to hire the dog out for Stud. I am sure he's more than likely curious about the pups lines.
Nathan: he's a nice looking dog. Kudos to you for trying to find out more about your little guy.
I am sure if other people on this site had a pup dropped in their laps they would more than likely try to find out his lines, just for health issues and some peace of mind.
Most of the breeders I've contacted in Colorado have been great so far. Almost all of them have emailed back and have tried to help. One in particular has been very helpful. I sent him some more photos of the dog, and he is very confident that he is a German import. He gave me several breeders that he thought he may have come from. I've contacted them and am waiting on a response.
