Do most of you Gsd owners use Frontline Plus for flea/tick control? Have any of your dogs experienced a reaction to the ingredients in the Frontline? I noticed a scabbed over wound between my dogs shoulder blades...right where I administered the Frontline around two weeks ago. I don't know if this is mere coincidence, or if he actually reacted adversely to the medication. I'm interested to know if any of you have experienced the same thing. Also, do any of you use anything other than Frontline? Is there a better flea/tick product out there?
I use Frontline Plus on my dogs. I have never had a dog with a reaction to the product personally, but I have seen dogs who had reactions like the one you described. I have even seen one case where a dog lost all of it's hair on the application point.
There may be something in it that is a problem for your dog. K9 Advantix is supposedly also a good product, though I have no experience with it. There are other non-topical products out there as well, but I am not sure they prevent tick infestations. That was the main draw of Frontline for me.
I use Frontline on my GSD and infact it didnt seem to work! Well I made sure hes in the weight limit, and I did apply it correctly, and he still scratches like crazy! Either I bought an expired one or maybe I need something else. I thought maybe it was just his skin, although he didnt scratch when he was shipped to me. Then someone told me that its his "puppy skin" that its itchy. (never heard of that) but then I found a big blood filled tick on him so it just must not be working. So I had to flea and tick bathe him but hes still scratching. I heard that you can have your pet on both Frontline and Advantage or is it Advatix? Not sure the truth in that though.
Chastity,
K-9 Advantix and Advantage are two different products. I tried the Advantix when it first came out because it touted mosquito repelling ability. (I live in a place endemic w/heartworm all year.) I don't know anything about giving your dog two different topicals at the same time, but I personally wouldn't do it. I don't even like giving the Frontline. For my dogs, the Frontline 'works better'. It is not a guarantee to keep all the ticks off. Usually, a tick will get on, bite and die. Some are tough little buggers and between the toes of the dogs seem to be a favorite hiding place. (Maybe the Frontline doesn't reach that far. ) I am impressed with the Best Shot sprays (Repellent and Med spray).
As far as your pup scratching, could be a host of things. Puppy coat coming out, dog food, recent vaccinations, flea, tick bites and/or the topical.
I have three dogs. One of them developed the scab at the application site too. I didn't know what it was either.
I use Frontline on my cats too. They HATE it. They see me coming and start spitting and fighting. I used to use Advantage and didn't have the same problem with them.
I used to apply Frontline. My lab had serious skin issues on that during all the time I was using it.
I subsequently switched to Neem Oil and have had no further problems.
I have six dogs. One is the PSD. The dept. supplies "revolution" for the PSD because he loathes the chewable heart gard and will hack until he throws it up.
Two weeks after I applied the "revolution" I found a tick right next to the application site! I was very upset.
I use Frontline on all my other dogs. No problems as of yet.
