Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with entropion (inverted bottom eyelid) in GSD pups and if so did the pup outgrow it or require surgery. If surgery was required, at what age did your vet recommend it? My vet says to wait until a year old to see if he will outgrow it and if not to do surgery at that time. Pup is 6 and a half weeks old now and eye is watering a little but other than that it does not seem to bother him. I'm keeping it lubricated. Thanks for any advice.
I haven't had any personal experience with it, but it was my understanding that it only gets worse with time & can only be corrected with surgery. Is your pup from a litter you just had?
Thanks Eva, Yes, this is from a litter that I had. Pup is very healthy and active otherwise. Thanks so much for the link. I will ask my vet about tacking the eyelid to see if that will help it correct itself. I have never seen this in any of my pups but even after doing this for years something new always comes up. That's just nature. Thanks for your help.
Does the eyelid actually roll in, (true entropion) or is it a few eyelashes themselves rubbing the eye? (trichiasis) Entropion can be outgrown, but trichiasis needs to have the hairs eliminated. (Usually just a quick zap with a laser or cautery unit takes care of it. I would be worried about the eye getting some long-term irritation from untreated entropion that could trigger pannus or worse problems later on. With Shar Pei puppies they often "tack" the eyelids for a brief period, but if they are going to outgrow it, they usually have by three to four months of age.
