It is Thanksgiving Day, the family is home for the most part. Dinner goes fine, really good food, everyone is happy, and then I decide to run to the store to get a few things. While I'm gone one of the older sons who is visiting decides to be cute and go into the garage and get a latax Holloween mask and come to the front window to scare the younger kids, and get a few laughs. The GSD sees the mask through the window and does his job, he lets everyone know that there is a potential nitwit in the window. THEN, it gets dumb, the son decides to push it and opens the front door, and gets "warned" by the GSD, who's showing all his teeth, walking slowly down a long hallway towards the door.
Throughout ALL of this the son decides to step into the house, and gets hammered FINALLY. The GSD recognizing him AFTER the mask comes off, while he's being bitten.
I come home from the store to find the son going to the E.R. to get 7 stitches.
Does anyone out there seem to have reletives that in spite of being advised REPEATEDY, seem to just not get it? You can come over, and walk in and out all day long after the GSD knows it is ok. He'll even greet you in some cases, will look you over, make sure your status has not somehow changed, but he is pretty laid back. Anyone have these problems? It ain't the dog, it is nitwits that have to "push it".

Ouch, I hope your son's okay. WHERE were the adults & why weren't they supervising the children?

If I had relatives over, I wouldn't care if they owned 50 bazillion dogs in the past, I would either take mine with me or crate him in a room, lock the door, and bring the key with me. People are stupid and I don't need my dog paying the price for someone's stupidity.
Probably the only exception to that rule would be if they were doing the same things with their dog as I would be (protection sports), and even then, it's iffy.

1) They don't think you mean them when you warn them.
2) They don't think the dog would really bite them.
3) They don't think it would happen that fast.
4) They don't think, ......... at all.
5) It would seem your GSD got to taste a turkey as well as the rest of you.
OK, it was a crass and insensative pun, but it was funny.

The son is an adult, but used to live in our home with the dog, my wife was home too, but was out back with my daughter in law & grand daughter. Other than that there were 3 other kids physically inside the house, my 7 year old daughter, my 9 year old son, both of which were in the area of the dog, and my 14 year old son who as downstairs, not in the immediate vicinity.
The GSD adores the kids, especially the younger ones. He has been around or a long time (3 years)now, and is known for being tolerant of strangers, as long as there is none of that eye contact garbage going on. He will ignore you, if you show him the same courtesy. Now, the son ought to have known, but like some "I just don't get it" types, failed to grasp the stupidity of the obvious.

It's too bad your son had to learn a lesson the hard way, but unfortunately some people can't learn any other way.

Exactly,
"It won't happen to "me",
to,
"It happened so fast",
to,
what was I thinking?
Followed by;
how many stitches will this be?
and
Do you think that he may have broken one of the bones in my forearm?

Do you think that he may have broken one of the bones in my forearm?
To which your reply should be "No I think YOU may have broken one of the bones in your arm!"
Seems like a very unfortunate accident nonetheless and the boy probably thought the dog really knew it was him all along and he was just playing along :-)
Hope he gets better soon!
