I am wondering if anyone has any experience training in winter dog sledding? I am just looking to take my dog camping with me and have her hump some of the kit, but am not sure how to begin this type of training. Any input or even redirection to a past post or web site or whatever would be appreciated.
Also, I have been looking online for harnesses and have only found the nylon type. Is there a reason for this; is nylon all that is used for sledding, or am I just not looking hard enough? My preference is leather, anyone know of a supplier?
Doesn't leather crack & break in the cold if you don't look after it properly? It could also be the retailers don't stock it because it doesn't sell. Have you thought about making your own or asking a local leather-worker to make it for you? Should be patterns available, either online or in sledding books. Also, there's different styles of harness, depending on whether your dog is hauling heavy loads or racing. Have you looked on the dog-hauling sites? They might have something more suitable, plus info on how to condition your dog to weights so it doesn't hurt itself.
Check out this link http://www.sleddogcentral.com/ - there is tons of info there and even a beginners section. Also check out the links in the left hand menu and you will find lots of equipment suppliers and other pertinent info. There is also a forum where you can ask any mushing related questions. Nylon webbing is pretty much the standard for dog harnesses as it is lighter, easier to maintain, less expensive and less attractive to dogs teeth .
Happy mushing!
Cool, thank you for the info. I'm not too concerned about her being able to pull, she is quite the power house; I am looking for training methods on how to properly control her pulling with voice commands; and I would like to work on pulling small loads, not for speed. I will definately check out the recommended web site! As far as leather goes.. I don't know if it cracks in the cold.. but I do know that it gets really cold up here! However, I do take prestine care of all my equipment, especially my leather goods. Thanx again!
