Does anybody know anything about disc playing with dogs? Or where I could find more information on it?
I understand that my pup isn't the typical breed for disc play (cockapoo) but I think its something he would really enjoy. And he has this incredible leap that he does off of everything.
Example, last night I called him up to come jump on my lap and he was only 10 feet away and he takes off at a dead sprint and leaps onto me from 5 feet away! It is the funniest thing!!
He's about 5 months old now and I'd like to start teaching him to grip on it so I was thinking of getting those soft frisbees that you can buy as toys for kids. I thought that would be a way for us to work on it in the home...
Does anybody know anything about this?

Hi Amy. Are you asking about actual sport competition (which I know nothing about) with frisbees, or just playing with your dog?
One of our mutt dogs is a Frisbee Princess! Years ago she "chose" that as her favorite toy, and she loves doing flying leaps to catch them, and of course struts around with her "catch" like she just really did something amazing.
Working with two frisbees creates a great opportunity for some obedience training - she has to bring the first one back and then "do something" (out the first one, sit, down, etc.) and her reward is the next one. It's great exercise (for her anyway) and she loves it. We use regular hard frisbees as she tears up the cloth ones, but she is bigger than your dog.
Now that we have gotten into basic Schutzhund work and "drive based obedience" working with 2 toys in a more structured way, I practice on her with my 2 frisbees. We're now working on heeling "in drive" etc. It's great learning for me, and great fun for her.
Go have fun! Why not!

I don't know if this is the right way to go about it but I started out with playing ball with one of my dogs, and getting her to catch and leap for it in mid-air. Then it's just a matter of getting her to figure out how to go after frisbees.

We use a soft frisbee with Jäger, you may want to look into that.

Kong makes a frisbee that is durable yet soft enough to not cause any trauma. No prickly edges from teeth. $10, but outlasts 5 each $2 ones. Also comes in 2 sizes.
My girl is definitely a Frisbetarian.

my dog will chase a frisbee a mile if she has to - until it stops moving, then she loses interest. she will almost never return it, though i have been training her to "fetch" the paper, so maybe i can get her to "fetch" the frisbee too?

WHEE on Frisbetarian! I will add that to my list of "favorite made up words" right up there with the made up word "craptacular." Also thanks for the tip on Kong made frisbees. I know what you mean - a couple of $10 durable ones would be a better investment than $20 worth of cheap ones.

This is kind of the same spot I am at with Tucker.
Since Winter's coming down here, I figure i would need some other toy to throw in the park because the ball is just going to "plop" right into the snow and he'll have a hard time finding it. And when it's 32 below i don't want to be standing out there freezing while he searches for it.
So I figured i'ld start bringing a frisbee and start using that. No go. Well, he'll go, but once he realizes its not the ball, he loses interest. He just doesn't seem as excited about the frisbee as he is with his ball.
so, anyone got any ideas about a ball that magically doesn't fall into snow??? lol
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

Thanks for all the posts everybody! I haven't really thought too much into competition or anything, just hobby and fun way to show off my pup.
My pup loves fetch but when he brings it back he doesn't just drop it, he makes us fight him for it...but he loves it! I haven't really thought that was a problem until now. Any thoughts on how to break him of the habbit of turning fetch into tug and get him to just drop it??
Also the balls we have are too big for him to catch in his mouth mid air...he's gotta shove them into the floor to get a good grip before bringing it back.
Maybe 2 frisbees would work though, after he came back to me with one, I'd toss another out and he'd go after that one (at least that's the idea).
I'll definately look into those Kong frisbees too!
Thanks to all!
