Our little guy, who is 12 weeks old already loves going for short walks. We expect very very little from him at his young age but I just wondered what to do about pulling on the leash.
I realise he is far and away too young for a prong collar but should I just let him pull until he reaches that age or should I be rewarding his non pulling or correcting his pulling?
We have another dog who we walk in front of him and I am sure this is the reason for his pulling, he wants to be at the front of the pack but boy is he strong already. By the time he gets old enough for a prong collar, I don't think I will have the strength to control him. Any suggestions?

Ty just finished puppy preschool last week and cannot start obedience until he is fully vaccinated. His vax schedule is behind because he has had intermittent diarrhoea for weeks, so he won't be starting for another 2 months. By then he will be 5 months old and much stronger.

Nikki,
What did you learn about leash walking in puppy class? and..
Are you marker training? If yes, what are you using for reward (treats or toy)?
Dennis is right on the money, you should teach them seperately until they are reliable on leash then essentially re-teach them together.
You should not allow your dog to pull you to anything. If your dog wants to sniff a fire hydrant, for example, and manages to pull you there, then he has just been able to "self reward" his pulling behavior. A reward can be anything that your dog wants, that being said if he wants to sniff the hydrant and has success doing it by pulling you to it, then the pulling will be reinforced! See how it works?

Have you tried doing 180s?
You will probably need to walk the puppy separately. A puppy cannot (or should not) walk the same distance as an adult dog anyway.
When he gets too far ahead, almost to the end of the lead, turn 180 and walk the other way. The pup will hit the end of the lead, turn around, and see your back going the other way! He will rush to catch up and as soon as he passes by, do another 180º turn.
You may find yourself spinning around at first, but he will learn how to pay attention. You can encourage him with praise too.

Nikki, if this is the same puppy who practices resource guarding, I think he has some strong ALPHA instincts -- BTW, what breed is he ?
Here's an article on the BEST way to live with your pup...
http://www.leerburg.com/puppygroundwork.htm
Now's the time for you to order Ed's puppy & dominant dog videos, not after he's too big & powerful to listen -- But meanwhile, they DO make puppy prong collars & that sounds like a good tool for you...

Good luck getting your little beastie under control <:-)

Thats a good idea, thanks for that. We only take him on very short walks at the moment, his exercise is very limited because he is going to be very big and we need to be careful about his bone development. But that is a reat idea. thanks.

Thanks Candi. Ty is not resource guarding at all, when we first brought him home he was growling if we approached him while eating but he doesn't do that anymore and he has never guarded any other resources, I think you are thinking of someone else.
He is not showing any dominant dog tendencies anymore.
I have studied the groundwork, over and over and we are following it to the letter. It really works and we are happy with the progress (our vet is amazed at the progress).
I ordered the basic obedience DVD yesterday. Ty is a Bullmastiff. I don't know that I need the dominant dog DVD. I am not too keen on putting him in a prong collar yet, he is only 12 weeks old after all. The time is near though, thanks for the advice.

Nikki, I just went back & re-read your post at the top of this thread, and my answer is still pretty much the same -- Your bullmastiff puppy wants to lead the pack <:-)
IMHO, he will soon become too big & strong for you to correct easily or effectively on a flat/buckle collar (and since a choke-chain can injure his neck, I don't recommend them) so I think your best bet would be a top-quality prong -- You actually give a lighter/softer correction on a prong collar, and they are not at all cruel when fitted/used properly...
So glad to hear you're following the Leerburg Groundwork protocol (!!!) Doing so from early puppyhood will probably insure that you never even need to buy Ed's Dominant/Aggressive Dog DVD, but I would still order "Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months" http://www.leerburg.com/120.htm <:-)
