A selfless handler wants their dog to continue working even if they (the handler) can not. The true question she should be asking herself is: Could my selfishness have caused the lives of Soldiers or Marines to be put in jeopardy?
I don't handle an EOD dog but my dog is a tool… not a pet. One of his jobs is to possibly save my life or a co-workers. If I had to give up being a handler tonight, my first thought would be to finding a replacement for me…. Someone who will continue with my dog where I left off. A true working dog lives to work…. To deny him that is wrong.
We have one officer who recently returned from Ramadi…. He lost Soldiers under his command to IED’s. He says he wished there were enough EOD dogs to search every car that needed to be searched.
All she did was take a lifesaving animal out of service to fulfill her own needs…. It doesn’t get any more selfish than that. But hay… we as a people celebrate what feels good and not what’s right.
I disagree with that, she darn near gave her life for this country and when she woke up her concern was for the dog. I think giving her the dog was a small price to pay and she earned him.

I guess I have issues with this post.
Ptlm. Grubb are you going to take your dog out and shoot him when his retirement come around? Or are you willing to give him a good home until he dies of natural causes?
I mean he will be a "useless tool" to you when he cannot work anymore, from the way it sounds in your post.
Yes the dog was an invaluable tool while he did his job and got injured doing it (along with the handler also we should not forget), I agree with that.
But if it is what gives her a bit of comfort and normalcy after she almost died defending OUR Country, then let her have the dog.
Asking God why she was allowed to live instead of a young father-to-be sounds pretty selfless to me.
There are K-9 teams that can fill the void that one team left.
I wish there was a dog to search every car also, but we really do need to be realistic and remember that those men, women and K-9's are doing the best that they can and need to be commended and rewarded for the work that they do.

Let the working dog work as long as possible to save my fellow Americans lives. When the dog can no longer work give it to a fellow retired K9 handler to spoil the dam good dog. I hope this does not turn into bleeding heart liberal crap cause my opinion will gret me throw off this site as it has many others.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!!
I wouldn't worry Steve, the Mods will shut this down if it gets out of hand, anybody interested in what the Mods and longtime members feel about it can review the link I posted.
People give up thier sons, daughters and own lives for this country and she will not part with a dog that could save their lives. MY bones hurt every day for 15 years cause the gulf war and I would let all my dogs and children go if need be. She deserves nothing but a kick in the ass. I will say no more about this and is probably the most I have ever said about the war..

I like Ed's post in the last discussion about this, which is the last one since he is the one that closed it.
I agree that working dogs should work, but I also agree that she should have the dog under the circumstances and she deserves respect regardless of what came of it.
P.S. I have several friends over there in the Marines and my nephew (also a Marine) was there almost a year. So please know that I support them 100% in their decisions to serve.
