I started raw Friday! I'm weighing the food right now until I get a few more days under my belt and am feeding 3+%. He is still looking for more when I get done. I started on the whole weight of the food being RMB's(chicken necks) and have started adding in ground turkey. He's done really good and hasn't had any stomach upset. I tested my veggie mix 2nite, but will probably wait a few more days to add it. Haven't tried organ yet. Anyway, Billinghurst's book said some small, active dogs(JRT) take up to 8% and can be fed more times a day. Is my dogs longing for more food a good indicator if he is getting enough or do I need to wait and see what his weight does? I wanted to ask cause I was leery of feeding more, don't want to make him fat, and have always just been used to feeding twice a day. All opinions welcome!

You know it's abit like humans who change their eating habits, once you quit eating junk food or fatty foods and start on healthier foods rich in fibers or less sugars at first you are hungry all the time and looking for more food until you get used to your new eating habits and your body adjust.I think dogs from kibbles to raw get a bit of the same way.Kibbles with water double their volume and make a dog feel more full, raw gets digested a bit quicker so a dog might look around for more.I think I would look at how he looks and judge by that .I am also with you I am looking for a book that gives more ratios of ,how much to give to each meat you use.I want to try giving them new stuff I never thought of using but I don't know how much to give.If anyone know of a book that gives that kind of info, let me know too.By the way I use tripe too, do you Mike?

Not yet. I'm not sure if I can get it around here, but someone posted a link to a place online that I'll try if I can't find it here.

The formula I use is 60% RMBs, 35% muscle meat, and 5% organ meat. I then break this down into ounces per day. For example, my dogs weigh 105 pounds. Multiply this by 16 (ounces in a pound). 105 x 16 = 1,680 ounces. I feed my dogs 2.5% of their weight. 1,680 x 2.5% = 42 ounces per day. Then you will divide the 42 ounces by the formula.
60% of 42 oz. = 25.2 ounces of RMBs
35% of 42 oz. = 14.7 ounces of muscle meat
5% of 42 oz. = 2.1 ounces of organ meat
Round off your ounces to get an even amount (25.2 = 25; 14.7 = 14; 2.1 = 2)
I feed twice a day, so these amounts are divided in half.
Hope this helps.

Puppies can be fed 8-10% of their weight, but I don't think that applies to older dogs - even small ones. How old is you pup? That will determine how many times a day you feed him. Many here switch their dogs to twice a day at 6 months and once a day at a year. I prefer to keep mine on twice a day even though they are 18 months old.
You will be able to tell if you are feeding too much by the size of his ribs. A good way to judge is by using the back-of-the-hand method. Make a fist. Rub your other hand over the top of your fist - that is too thin. Rub your hand over the back of your hand - that is too fat. Rub you hand over the front of your fist - that is just right. Sometimes your eyes and hands are a better measure of correct weight than a scale is.

Hi jan,
Do you ever use Tripe?
That is what I use as a vegetable matter.I used to make a veggie mix but I was told that using tripe is sufficient. My time is so limited that I am trying to cut my work(as far as making all the dogs food) in half so I am searching for easier and quicker methods .I don't want to feed kibbles.
I have done the same raw diet for my dogs that my father as done for years and I am noticing so many other ways of feeding that I am open to try some new meats and other supplements. I had never used kelp before and ordered some so I am going to add that to their diet. Do you use Kelp?

I don't feed either tripe or kelp. Raw tripe is not all that close to my area and is somewhat expensive to buy and have shipped. Connie and Alice are better equipped to answer these questions, but I seem to remember that kelp and alfalfa, which are usually fed together, can be key factors in allergy-related problems. Hopefully one or the other will chime in here.

I forgot to mention that if you feed twice a day, there are two different ways to feed. You can feed all bones at one meal and all muscle/organ meat at the other meal. Or you can combine the bones, muscle meat and organ meat and feed that combination twice a day. For about a year I fed the former because I had read that muscle is denser than bone, so why have the chicken bones hanging around waiting for the muscle meat to digest. About 6 months ago I decided to combine bones and meat just for variety. My dogs really seemed to prefer it and there have been no ill effects whatsoever. There are a zillion combinations you can create and it makes for some very interesting meals.
