My 12 week old gsd female seems to constantly have a brown waxy subsatnce building up in her ears. I have to clean daily. Vet said they looked clean inside. I have always had floppy ear dogs whom ears never got cleaned more than once a week and were never this dirty. I have her on a well balanced raw diet. Any advice, comments is this normal. Thanx
The vet will be able to take a scraping and figure out if it's a yeast, bacterial, or mite problem.
I believe if it turns out to be yeast, it may be an ongoing problem (that needs to be kept on top of). I know many people make up a mixture found on the following site http://itsfortheanimals.com/BLUE.HTM and make up the Blue Power Ear Treatment. Just make sure you don't fill up the dogs ear inside the house and let them shake their heads, the stuff will go flying and it stains. But it works.

Thank you so much!
My 6 month old has an ear infection that was just diagnosed a few days ago. The culture showed excessive yeast growth....funny too, because I'm constantly washing her dog beds, I always feel that her bedding has a doggy odor, and she's SO clean I've been a little miffed about it. The vet said perhaps it(the infection) was from her getting her ears wet playing "attack the water hose spray"!!.
I'll defintely keep this info in mind!

Yeast based ear infections can also be due to allergies. I have one pet male that's almost 8 yrs old and has suffered most of his life. Longest we went was 4 yrs without a problem, until the dog food changed their forumla. He's now on RAW and no more problems.
Thanks for bringing this subject up as I am dealing with this problem with my 2yr old Golden. Have been using the powder (recommended by groomer) for 2 wks with no improvements. Bought some Ear Mite liquid treatment this wkend and, after sitting down and reading through the enclosed pamphlet, it sounds like it could eat my dog's ear off!
He has the brown waxy stuff and the stink in his ear, though the rest of him smells normal. Found a patch near his neck that he scratches that seems to have clear oily appearance as stated in the article. Thought about food allergies too, and am trying to eliminate each factor every few days.
Jenn, thanks for your links and helpful info! Looks like I'll have some reading to do tonight...

I do know in the BARF book for dogs with ear/skin problems they recommend white meat as well as activated omega 3 and 6's instead of the inactive ones's. My male gets primarily chicken (beef now that I know he does ok with that) as well as cod liver oil and a pill of primrose oil for the omega 3 and 6

Well, honestly, the second the vet confirmed the ear infection, my thought went to food allergies. However, I have been so happy with her food, I can'tbear to think she is allergic to something in it that is just showing up now!
My show line male is allergic to everything and since I spent the money to have his blood tested( almost $300) and swithced his food to one with none of the offending ingredients, HE hasn't ever had an ear infection.
I'm going to hold out hope that perhaps she just got water in her ears and that was the cause of the yeast overgrowth, but I will talk to my regular vet anyway. Perhaps I'll do the allery panel just for the heck of it...
