My little 10-pound Norwich terrier mix occasionally (about once a day) starts snorting loudly through her nose. The snorting noise comes on exhalation. She'll do this 5-10 times in a row and then stop. It seems like she's got something stuck in there, but I can't know for sure.
Anyone else witnessed something like this? Is a trip to the vet in order?
I think what you're talking about is the "backwards snorts".
Our sighthounds, especially the whippets, do this. So do the other dogs sometimes, but the sighthounds do it most often. Pressure on their throat (larynx) can start it up. Also starts after / while eating, or sometimes out of the blue.
I honestly think, watching them, it must be like an attempt to clear off their soft palate. Dog version of human nose sniffing.
It usually stops pretty quickly in the non-sighthounds. With the greys and whippies it sometimes goes on long enough to be annoying.
You can sometimes help them out by covering their nose. After a couple wheezy snorks they seem to knock loose what's bothering them and stop.
Never thought of it as "clearing his throat". My Rott does the same thing (did it this morning, matter of fact). My last Rott did it too, as well as some pointers I've seen. Oddly the idiot terrier with the four foot beak that shares my house never does it. He might hurt himself trying to snort through that great big schnozzola!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Sounds like a relatively normal thing from what you are saying.
Stephan, nice photos of the dog, did you take them yourself? I enjoy photography in addition to playing with my dog
Thanks for the compliments to Tig. The pictures were taken by my youngest son. He does a great job of bringing out who your dog is. I only wish I could get him to do more work for me
