This ten-year-old (retired) working Border Terrier has a slight history of IBS, so my daughter went to a vet with nutrition specialty, and the vet, who usually encourages raw, put him on home-cooked with the Balance IT supplement for calcium, etc., not wanting to risk any kind of salmonella or other pathogen.
All of his health, coat, energy, etc., seem much improved, but he is drinking a lot and peeing a lot. At least double what he was.
So now he's been tested for kidney stones and infection, bladder, all UTIs, pancreatic and liver enzymes, and blood sugar, and all were good (not even borderline).
Does anyone have any experience with an unexpected diagnosis for a dog with excessive thirst and urination?
Except for the restlessness when he needs to pee frequently, he seems to be in good healh and no discomfort.
Thanks for any ideas.

its been my experience with dogs that are excessively thirsty and pee alot that they are carrying an infection; possibly low grade, perhaps a very slight temp. but none the less, causes them to drink a lot of water. good luck. hope you find the prob.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers |

prostate, UTI - the first thing I always think about for drinking a lot is kidneys going bad - or kidney infection - also tumor on the liver/other organs can cause problems - hemanigosarcoma, or splenic tumor that is causing fluid build-up and anemia.

Has he been tested for a UTI?
Yes, and also any other infections.
He has had a few thousand dollars worth of tests now.
Right now he is having his adrenal functions checked. This has been done, as have tests for Cushing's, all kinds of kidney ailments, and blood sugar tests.
This will be something pretty esoteric, I'm afraid. Chances are, whatever this is will be extremely rare or else a borderline case of something that has not yet shown on the blood or urine tests.
Next will be ultrasounds of his internal organs.
Poor guy is thirsty all the time and peeing so much that even short car-trips --- and everyone's sleep --- are interrupted. But he doesn't seem to be sick in any other way.

Is there a vet university anywhere within driving distance? This sounds very bizarre, please keep us posted. If I find anything online besides what was tested already I'll link you up.

I suggested that maybe he could stop the Balance IT diet supplement for a few days, just on the off chance that he is getting too much of some micronutrient.
He went to the vet today, and she said OK when my daughter asked her that -- that he would be fine without it for a while... then if there is immediate improvement, they can re-think his supplementation and give him each micronutrient separately.
This is pretty unlikely to be the fix, IMO, but it was worth a shot.
Anyone else who has any relevant experience .. I'm writing down every one for a list for the vet.

My retired Schutz. dog (lives at my parents, had those symptoms and it ended up being his prostate, we had him neutered and it stopped. Now he gets skin infections go figure, but I think prostate might be the first thing your vet should check. Now when he urinates often does it come out normal or drizzle (sorry for details) but ours drizzled often but never a
full urination amount.
