I will be getting a GSD for a family companion (wife with a young son) and work (Schutzhund, PSA). I keep going back and forth on older versus younger. I know the pros and cons of both. My main concern with a young pup of 8wks of age is will he be able to do the work at maturity from a temperament and physical standpoint? With the older pup you get a much better idea of aptitude for work and physical issues (prelims), but why is he being sold and who to trust? I would appreciate any thoughts and input.
It all depends what age older pup you mean, but both I think are good.Find out what foundation the older pup has had and of course what pedigree and why they have it still and so on.
For Schutzhund work unless I am buying from a breeder I know or someone that has put some foundation I like an 8 week old pup better.I have bought at every age.I bought at 8 weeks, 1 year, 12 weeks and 2 years of age.You have to see the pups!!A must if you can.Cindy Rhodes is selling pups that might work for you, you might want to look into it. What type of line were you looking for? And have you done Schutz before? http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r77/cadogancna/
Older pup will cost you much more money if it shows the potential to do the work and it is usually a signifigant amount more money. A younger pup less money but study the parents titles carefully. If you do your homework you should get a nice familyu working dog with no problems.
Good luck and have lots of fun.
