hello you all im sefi from israel
last week ihave found at acaffe iwhere siting at astary 2 months old puppy feamale black as the night in an owfull shape: belly swalow, crazy dandruffs all over her, diarrheic and apathetic like arock absolutely no drives expt maybe dying drive
laugh any way her desperate and hopeless look prong pinch my cold heart and itook her home with me in apurpose to nurse her untill shel be ok and than find her ahome or moving her to ashelter nearby... i intreduce her to my 6 mals and she fall asleep....
two days she where asleep iwas most suprise that couldnt get aclue on her breed mix orgin, maybe abit of canan dog (israeli wild dogs) after she wooke up she start eating like ahungry labrador...than istart abit working her obidience for when she get to the shelter her adds will get better for being abit trained and iwas suprised by her eating drive and her trainability than one by one her drives start to take place: at first she didnt eveven smell the ball or tug than istart to stimulate her with arod with atied rubber ball at the end of it string and igot to tell you at first she find my efforts hilarious but after while that stary puppy start to move, than jump than flying after the ball alitlle efforts and the tug found hes place too, ihave to manchion all thou her bite is very solid shes abit week for that kind of drive... her confiedence got better with her health and drives aswell and ifound her very energethic confident and solid pup allthou very soft (as much as you can tell about atwo months old puppy). icalled the black dirt bag "tzel" - that mean shadow on hebrew.
now here is my dilemma: ican adopt her and prepare her to start asearch program (thats what ido for my living among others k-9 works) and my fellings say her adds quit good but you can never tell especially at her case when icant even guess one of her pharents breed iknow allmost for sure she will be fine with at least on leash search on medium area field terms, after that ican set her for security work at my company ;or sell her to the police forces or private coustimer for alow price. either way she will take place and effort which icould invest in agood feamlae puppy that could perhaps take place at my breeding program, iallso need right now adog that do protection and scent work and ihave enough just search dogs at my crates and iknow allmost for fact that puppy will never grow for areal protection or attack dog... on the other hand iknow adog with that kind of drives will probably wont ge along for an ordinery family pet...
ihave anice dilema here and iwill appreciate veru much any opinion you have.
Sefi, it sounds like your heart is saying to keep her, but your head says that she is not the sort of working dog you need.
I would say IF she has the drives and other qualities you need in a working dog then keep her. From what you say, though, you are not too sure then I would give her away. Puppies are easier to adopt, especially if you make them look pretty & happy.
IF you want a pet, then keep her
What usually works for you? Following your heart or your head?
yea its that old nasty fight head vs heart allright...
dont get me wrong the puppy is a"nice +" puppy on my scale ijust see her turning to asoft dog as shes grow old and idont like to work with softs, ican do with easy corections but working operational with me can corect quit hard somtimes and making adog that withstand that from asoft dog usally takes quit alot of work and time that can be invest on other fields...
and realy was going to do something with my dream to do gsd comeback (im working only with mals for about 7 years now and iquit miss that black companian of mine for some time now...
on the other hand - theres athing on taking astray from the street and make him aworking dog that might save lifes some day...
anyway ithink you right i probably should give her away making room avilable for aworking prospect...
what works for me head or heart? hard to tell my head build my career and sucsses but my heart saved my life afew times...
Are there programmes in Israel like there are in the US where strays are trained as working dogs? I'm thinking of search & rescue, hearing dogs for the deaf, therapy dogs, that type of thing. Maybe you can donate her to an organization which does those things?
What ever you decide to do, you have saved her life and because of your kindness she has a chance of finding a good home with either you or someone else. Let us know what you decide to do.
Thank you for saving this puppy. Since you are in the business of training working dogs, do you know of any other trainers that train Search and Rescue? Search and Rescue dogs do need to be very friendly and trusted NEVER to attack, so they are much different than a police dog. Maybe you do not need to do the training yourself, but can find another trainer to do the job.
If there is a war in Israel (I am not up to date on current events) the dog would be valuable to help find injury victims or families that have been separated.
She may not make a good police dog but maybe will make a great search dog or detection dog.
