JAck, my sister's dog (Chow/lab mix) has been licking his privates for maybe almost a month. I didn't think anything of this because I figured he was just feeling a little perverted or something since he is a young male (maybe 2 and a half years old, but he IS neutered). Now I am concerned because it has been going on for a long time (or at least it seems like a long time). Also, started a week or two ago, he now iches himself (He will usually whine and "talk" to me, and then sit down and scratch himself for a long time, as if to tell me "Hey I am itching badly, fix it!"). And a few days ago he started licking his paws. I have never had a dog with allergies so I don't know how to handle the situtation or what to give him. I am planning on switching him to human grade food and then maybe I should get some supplements from here. We are trying to get my sister to take him to the vet, but she doesn't really pay attention.
Our Shepherd licked, scratched and chewed on herself but when we switched foods it made a huge difference. As we have since learned, the key is less carbohydrates and better meat sources. I'm sure others can give more specific information but I just wanted to encourage you that improving the food should help a great deal.
