Okay, I've just about worn myself frazzled trying to figure out what is right and what is wrong nutritionally for my 8 week old pup. Just when I think I've got it, some conflicting info comes my way.
Connie, and others in the know...please help before my brain explodes!!!
1.) What's the percentage of protein you want for a GSD puppy?
2.) Does that percentage ever go up, and if so, when?
3.) What's the deal with calcium requirements or limitations?
4.) How do raw marrow bones contribute to #3? How many is enough...how many would be too much?
5.) If doing mixed feeding, do you want adult food...or a smaller amount of puppy food?
I have read so many conflicting things about all of this stuff, and I know you guys practice what you preach so please HELP!!!
Oh, and while you're at it...when can the pup go for a mile or two mile walk without dangering his joints? I heard a year, but that seems so late...he'll destroy the house long before that!
Thanks all!

Hi! I'm new here, but I'd really like to know the answers to all of these questions too (there's a calcium issue?). They're a big part of why I signed up. There seems to be so much information out there it's hard to know what to believe. It seems like people here are pretty grounded.
Looking forward to some great answers and advice!

Heya Amber,
I can't answer the food queston, but I'll let you know what we did with our dogs when they were pups. We used to do a combination of walking & carrying them, until they got too heavy to carry.
I used an old beach bag & I'd just pop my dog in it. Just the cutest thing with her head sticking out of the bag I'd take her to the local park or walk in town so she'd would get used to traffic & people (Initially, the pup was in the bag, because I was afraid of people stepping on her). I'd alternate 5-10 mins of walking with 5-10 mins of carrying, letting her indicate to me when she was getting tired.
BTW, it was all walking if we were on pavement, no running until they had finished growing. Running was them playing on grass.

When my pup was 8 weeks what I considered the very shortest of strolls was an absolute marathon for him. Total sensory overload...every leaf, twig, and blade of grass to be sniffed, every sound to concentrate on, all the new sights to see. Could easily spend a half hour outside and not go very far at all. And the best part of it was that he was good and tired and NOT over-exercised.
Now at five months we do as Eva suggested: take shorter walks on pavement and running around on grass. He lets me know when he's had enough.

Are you asking about kibble or fresh food?

There's a calcium issue if you are asking about a fresh-bones-to-fresh-meat ratio.
Are you talking about kibble or fresh food?

I was asking about kibble specifically, but isn't it true that a dog's daily nutritional requirements are the same regardless of if it's fresh or kibble? In other words, if it needs a daily 25% protein, that doesn't change if it's fresh or kibble, right? I'm lost.
PS- The calcium issue I was talking about was the calcium to phosphorus ratio. (I know my spelling is all over the map. I'm tired!! :sleep

RE: Calcium...should I be adding a calcium supplement to my dogs food? They get eggs (shell and all) everyday and chicken legs, backs, thighs, wings and also beef and venison RMB's and beef recreational bones with THK. Also there is the Vitamin E, Acidopholous (spelling, sorry ) and Salmon Oil.
Thanks

No, the calcium-phosphorous ratio, which is probably the most important micronutrient ratio in canine nutrition, is the ratio of bones-to-meat. It is why feeding all muscle meat and no bones to a dog is a nutritional disaster. If we didn't feed bones, then we would definitely have to supplement with calcium.
The calcium comes from the bones in the RMBs.
