Hello, What is everyones view on protein comsumption? I've been feeding my adult Doberman Evo raw kibble which has like 42% protein. When I talked to my vet he said that it puts a strain on the dogs kidneys. He couldn't believe that there was that much protein in that food and said it was more like a cat food. Anyone?
I will try to write more later; I'm on my way to work, but I just have to say WHEN WILL VETS START PAYING ATTENTION TO NUTRITION??? I can't believe that not only to they not SELL good food, but they aren't even aware of what's it's comprised of.
My vet said that cats are carnvores and need that much protein. Humans and dogs are ominvores and need a balance.
Pardon me? Rolls eyes at vet...
BASIC anatomy would say that the dog's a carnivore: sharp canine teeth, shearing molars and a jaw structure which doesn't allow for side-to-side movement. Herbivores & omnivores have jaws which work side-to-side to help with chewing vegetable matter. Sometimes in archeological digs there's a problem between identifying pig & human teeth as they're so similar, with both being omnivores.
Dogs ARE actually omnivores but eat mostly meat. Their only vegetation consumption comes through the contents of the stomachs and intestines of the animals they eat. That's why when we feed raw, we add veggies. Vegetables are good for them.
They don't need the grinding teeth because everything they eat has been pre-chewed by the animal they just killed and has already started the digestive process, thus softening it up for them. Goes right down.
However, they are primarily carnivorous and thus need to eat primarily meat. Your vet is full of crap. If your dog is doing fine and you are feeding a balanced feed then you are in the clear.
iirr, the bag of innova evo says it is meant to supplement or be an occasional substitute for a raw diet. it is not intended as a stand-alone, long-term diet. you can all correct me if i'm wrong about what it says on the bag, i'm too lazy to go dig mine out and look.
in any event, this is just anecdotal, but i and some others i know have not had a good experience feeding innova evo more than a few days by itself. the dog does great at first, and then gets sick.
i reserve it for when we are traveling or backpacking, and stick to feeding raw the rest of the time.

HOLY CRAP
When wolves, coyotes and foxes start attacking veggie gardens instead of chicken pens and sheep 58% of the time then and only then I will start going to your vet.
Also the African wild dog and those darn dingo's.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!!
