I recently got a book as a gift called "Food Your Pets Die For"
Upon skimming through I read that it is legal for kibble companies to use euthanized pets as "food" that goes into their kibble. It gives a list of who utilizes this "process". I find that positively revolting (if it is true) and also it explains that the drug used to euthanize (sodium pentobarbital) has been found in the kibble at moderate levels......Can anyone tell me if this is actually true?
IF IT IS, then it is one more reason to feed the RAW diet.
(The author of this book also promotes feeding a natural human food diet, although she disagrees with the raw meat and cooks hers)
Thanks

Oh yes, Carol. It's true. You can acutally do a Yahoo! or Google search for pentobarbital in pet food and you'll get plenty of hits...including a gov't site revealing the various foods tested and their levels. Apparently, they thought the stuff broke down during the processing...they were wrong. I have an aunt who I have never really liked, and who happens to feed her dog Kibbles 'n Bits, (coincidence? I think not, lol!)which is one on the list (along with Nutro, Hills, etc.) She is continually bragging about how calm her GSD mix is, while mine paces continually. I have had to bite my tongue 'til it bleeds to not say to her "Well, you cheapskate-that's because you've been gradually euthanizing him over the past 9 years. Try taking poison out of his diet and see how he does." I have tried to inform her of this, (nicely) but she's just one of those people...
While pentobarbital is certainly not the only or the worst thing wrong with these low-quality foods, it does seem to have more of an effect when you tell people what it is. For some reason, they have a tougher time telling me why they should continue to feed their dogs a euthanasia chemical than ground corn and gluten.
I have shown these sites and their happy news to everyone in my office who thinks I'm insane for feeding my dogs so much better than myself. Lemme try to find the links...
Good ol Hersh, what a pet lover, when he said fluffy he had such a grin on his face. But hey Kibbles from what I understand makes dogs bloated, it looks as if Hersh has tried a few
The dog/cat food industry is such a money making product that
the AAFCO forget their morals and values and will throw anything they can to make dog/cat food the cheapest way possible. That's why I will not contribute to it "dog Food" one cent.
