Hi,
I'm back. I was wondering if anyone else has Dutch Shepherds? I have my first and he is an awsome dog. He is so different from my German Shepherds. I am wanting to learn as much as I can about them. I have been slowly, very slowly, building a small breeding program with my German Shepherds, I have been learning from other breeders, reading everything about them, and working with them for a few years, and am waiting to find out if the two GSDs that I have now will pass all the health cert, OFA, Thyroid, Backs and everything else that they need, including working titles, SchH, Ring, and other sports. If they both pass everything I will have my first litter next year. I hope to possibly start a program with Dutch Shepherds aswell, I have fallen head over heels in love with this breed since I got my first one this last summer. I got lucky with him. I friend from Triple Crown owned him, and suddenly had to sell him, and offered him to me. I was looking for a drug dog with his type of temperament, so I jumped at the chance. The dog is a excellent drug dog, and has just been the best dog there is for me. The guy who owned him before took and competed with him in the NNDDA nationals this last April and the dog took 4th. He did very well. I want to learn as much about the Dutchies to help me build a program to produce top working dogs. The Dutch I bought from my friend came from Seven Pines Kennel with Judith Powell, and I have been talking to her a lot, but would also like to hear from some others aswell who have had experience with Dutch Shepherds. Thanks in advance. I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

Hi Geneva
I have a Dutchie/Mal cross and he is an absolutely wonderful dog.
I do not know much about Dutchies but am starting to research but I would have to say that they are not that far off from a Malinois.
He is a little more mellow than a Mal but has high drive to work.
His background before he came to me is pretty much a rescue type case. He was in a working home that became unstable and he was banished to a crate in a basement with very little interaction and outside time for a year. The last straw for the handler was when he chewed up the crates and chewed holes in the house walls to get out of the basement.
He is trained in Disaster work and also I have been working with him in Air Scent for SAR. He and I will test in June 07 for certification and I have had him since October 06.
He is a great dog and I from what I have noticed, the Dutchies are few and far between, at least here in the US anyway, unless I am missing things when I research.
I have seen them before and that is mostly in Law Enforcement for dual purpose dogs.
I wish I knew more but that is the joy of research.

I have nothing to add, but I liked your photo Carol!
This thread actually reminds me of a really SAD story You know how brindle's the lost colour in German Shepherd? Well, it wasn't in Tasmania as recently as the mid-80's. One of my neighbours had a pure-bred GSD which was brindle. He looked very much like a brindle Dutch Shepherd. The importation ban was lifted in, I think 1976, but you can bet the old Aussie bloodlines from the 1920's weren't kept, because of the faddishness of the new Gerrman lines.
Australia had a ban on importing GSD's from the 1920's to the mid-70's, because the wool graziers were afraid of the GSD breeding wth the dingo & creating a "super-dog," which in itself is another sad story. There's actually very few purebred dingos left in the wild, because of interbreeding with domestic dogs.

I have a female Dutch Shepherd, Foxie van Neerland. She is very different from all the GSDs that I have had; more sensitive and very attached to me. She has very strong drives and is doing great in her Sch training. Finally, we are about ready for her first trial this spring! The problems is me and the distance from a trainer- not her. Here is a link to her pic etc. http://www.ravenridgedogs.com/dutch/females.shtml
Her hips and elbows are good and she is also UKC registered. I do hope to breed her next year (pending her title) and I am looking for a strong male of KNPV lines, hopefully UKC as well- if anyone knows of that kind of male, please let me know. There are folks who prefer that as it gives them more options in competing in dog sports with their dog. The DS that I have known are extremely athletic, like a Malinois. They sure can jump!

Geez, the more I look at these pictures (nice dogs by the way :grin the more I think that Roch is mostly Dutch.
Yes that is hubby playing in the house with Roch...he and that dog are pretty attached to each other which is different because hubby is not a BIG dog fan. He likes labs and is great at training gun dogs, but when the Bloodhound came home he laughed at me and when the Mal came home he was in disbelief of the drive although now that they have proved to him that they are great working dogs he is proud of the work that I do. Now Roch is here and they are constantly playing when they are home. It is always great to see a skeptic of the high drive dog(and not so smart but trails like a fool BH) change their minds.
Now all I have to do is get him to accept the GSD that may be coming home......yikes

HI,
Thanks for the responses. Here are a couple of pics of my Dutch. He doesn't have the number of stripes, like the normal Dutch, but what he lacks in stripes, he makes up for in his ability to work. He is a outstanding Drug Dog, he is excelling at Schutzhund, and learning so fast that my GSDs look like they are learning in slow Motion.

I hope to breed him, his Hips and Elbows go out next month and the vet thinks they will come back good or excellent, and all the other tests that need to be done, and he should have his Schutzhund titles by the end of 2007, and than in 2008 he will go into Ring sport. I should be getting his UKC papers in the mail soon. There was some concerns about breeding him because of his color, but I have been talking to people about genetics, and am going back to college to learn about genetics and breeding, and if I plan the breeding carefully, it should be ok. I am trying to breed working dogs, the pups from his litter will be going into law enforcement and sport work. There are people already wanting pups from him. I love this breed, they are so intune to their handlers, and boy can they jump . Let me know what you think of him.
