owner of a pup of mine just contacted me - pup is male, 8 months old - healthy in every way except one - he is "housebroken" but can't control his urination - urinates when excited, but also "squirts" urine whenever, whereever - when he's not excited too - pup is not submissive - good temperament, clear-headed (not nervous or fearful, not flighty according to owner). But even when owner takes his collar, or snaps the leash on - any time he is handled, he squirts "everywhere". Owner is at the end of his rope - I wish he had contacted me sooner. I will take the pup back of course, but first would like to see if anyone on this board has any ideas I could pass on to him. He did consult a vet who told him "drugs or surgury" without seeing the dog of course - vets who spout off cures without finding out what the problem is, drives me nuts. Help, anyone? Appreciated.
I had a pup out of my breeding years ago (Dobermann) that did the same thing, it wasn't submissive urination but he would squirt when you grabbed his collar or snapped a leash on. It started when he was about 6 months old and I basically just observed the dog to see what happened....lo and behold, he outgrew it months later and became a really great dog... I always wondered if he was going thru some "confusing feelings" as he entered young adult hood because he became a very SERIOUS and tough adult..
This probably won't be helpful in your situation, but just in case I'll post it. I noticed that my male (2 1/2 years old) was squirting out urine at inappropriate times (i.e. on a sit-stay, on a down-stay, just walking around). I knew that was totally abnormal for him, so I took him to the vet (a good vet, that totally examined him). It turns out he has an enlarged prostate, and is on Baytril for 10 days. The weird urination is gone already (8 days into it). Anyway, for what it's worth, maybe having a good vet examine the pup would be a good idea.
Molly,
To what Tara said... I'd tell him to have the dog checked out by a vet, other than the one he already spoke with, and have a urinalasis done along w/ the prostate checked. If you recall, Ando had this problem, but only dribbled unrine after he peed, it was his prostate. This could be a urinary track infection or prostate problem as Tara said or even what Cindy said.
Brandi
Thanks Brandi and Tara and Cindy - your posts are very helpful. I did ask the owner of this pup to take a urine sample to the vet before making a final decision on whether to give him up or not - so he did that, results came back today - according to vet his urine is clear of any bacteria, and there is no indication of any problems in the urine to indicate infection or anything else. Now, I did not ask about a possible prostrate infection - would this show up in the urine testing? If not, maybe I'll contact his owner again with that suggestion - or have that done if I get the pup back. Owner can't handle the pee-clean up in the house - pup is a house dog - which I understand. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your help and information.
