I need to get my 10 month old shepherd tattooed; however I am a little worried that the procedure will cause his ear to fall. Does anyone out there have any experience with tattooing older shepherds?
I tattoo more dogs at age 2 years then puppies ( folks waiting for OFA age ) and I've never had a dropped ear because of it - I'm not seeing how the tattoo itself could damage the ear, unless some bizzare infection occured.
Do you have any trouble tattooing 2yr olds Will? I mean with aggression, my 2 yr old needs to be tattooed, and hes a bit particular about who can and cant touch his ears.
Tim
They're all out during the OFA procedure, so I only need 75 seconds total to get it done.
Doing it a fully awake dog that has done work in protection in the past???
I have tattooed several hundred litters of puppies in the left ears plus a number of adults. This does not cause ears to NOT STAND. I have never heard of one time it has caused an ear to not stand.
If it were to cause problems it would cause them in puppies.
Thank you for your timely responses. Someone mentioned this or I heard it somewhere a long time ago so when the issue came up again recently it was a concern I needed to clear up. Again thank you for putting this wives tale to rest, I can breathe easier now.
Of all the tattoos I have seen, only one dog had an issue related to it and that was due to some real negligence on the part of the tattooer. I'm guessing that somehow when they folded the ear back for the tattoo they actually bent/broke the cartilage. The pup had to have the tip of the ear taped and it eventually healed w/ a slight kink. This was an import pup- so I can't say for sure what the deal was, but I've never seen anything like that before or since.
Now about infection- it shouldn't be an issue for anyone who pays attention to their dog. Back when I was in 4-H we used to have to tattoo our llamas (yes, you read correctly) someone didn't pay attention (just left it out in a pasture) and it did get an infection that then required 1/2 of the ear to be removed. But honestly, if you just pay attention this should never ever be a problem. Even micro-chipping has a chance of infection.
Stacie tattooing LLama's back in her 4-H days.....
Even I'm afraid to make a witty comment on this one!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
