So my fiance and I have been going nuts trying to come up with a vacation we can take that allows us to bring our GSD puppy--he will be 4 mos or so when vacations time comes.
I know camping is an option, but is there ANYTHING else? Anywhere in the country is fair game--we'd prefer something warm, but really who cares at this point?
Anyone know of any hotels that allow German Shepherds? Any cool dog vacations sites?

I always took my dogs with me on vacation...
The ACE hotel in Seattle Washington allows for dogs. Very cool, european accomodations

Looks like they have a new Portland location as well.
I always enjoyed staying there, plus, there is a very very cool club/restaurant downstairs called the Cyclops. There is an Elvis Shrine in there !!! How can you beat that?

Amber,
Carmel California styles itself as a "dog friendly" town. Doris Day lives here and she is an animal fanatic. She owns a hotel in Carmel that allows pets. Some outdoor restaurants have dog menus. Carmel beach allows dogs...off leash only if they obey voice commands. The only drawback is that it is NOT usually warm here. September/October is our summertime but otherwise it is foggy and kinda chilly. The Pacific ocean is damn cold, too!

Have you considered Northern Michigan? I realize it isn't "warm", but there are many dog friendly areas, especially in Mackinaw City and on Mackinaw Island.
If you are into historic sites - most of them in the area allow dogs on the grounds. There is also a lot of outdoor, dog friendly dining...many of the shops allow dogs inside.
We've also traveled into the Upper Peninsula to visit places like Taquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point (a lighthouse and museum on Lake Superior), Big Spring (Michigan's deepest natural spring), and Fayette (an abandoned mining town).
I've camped when I went there, but I'm sure there are dog friendly accommodations too.
My GSD has always been with us when we make these trips...she has been over the Mackinaw Bridge as many times as I have!
We have a cabin in Northern Michigan now, and still continue to take day trips to Mackinaw & other areas...if this peaks your interest feel free to PM me
All this thought has made me want to go "up north" as us Michiganders say!

we belong to a site called takeyourpet.com that has AAA type listings of every hotel in the country that takes pets, and what their rules are.
through them, we found a fabulous luxury hotel in downtown seattle that caters to pets, and our mastiff got a royal welcome there. pick your destination first. there are pet-friendly hotels and motels in every part of the country.

Amber, My husband and my 2 gsd's have rented waterfront cottages in Maine. Northeren maine has gorgeous lakefront property! I googled "waterfront rentals in Maine" and found lots of great spots that are pet friendly. We always leave the place cleaner than when we arrived to assure that we can come back!

Well, if you want someplace warm how about the west central coast of Florida? I'm not sure when you are planning vacation so I can't be sure of the prices but visit http://www.doncesar.com. It is a beach resort on the Gulf of Mexico that is VERY dog friendly. There is a $25 REFUNDABLE deposit for your dog. There is a dog butler that will deliver a Loews Loves Pets goodie bag and the mini fridge has gourmet baked dog treats. (Proceeds go to benefit AKC Rescue Group) There is even a doggie chef with a special dog menu and a dog walk area on the hotel grounds. NO I don't work for them but I live in the area! Lots of dog friendly areas

Hi Amber. Since our pack has grown, we have gotten into camping. We've outfitted a "toy hauler" floor plan camper with custom crates built in the back "toy hauler" section.
Before that, we often traveled with the dogs. You just need to take a bit more time calling ahead to find the hotels/motels that are dog friendly.
By far the BEST pre-camper vacation was to the North Woods in Wisconsin (Hayword area - Ghost Lake Lodge specifically). We went there a couple of times - rented a cabin on a lake for a week. Of course we made sure it was dog friendly before making the plans and reservations. Those were some awesome vacations!!
Best wishes making your plans..

Amber ,
We also took our dogs to Carmel by the sea( at the time we lived in Los Gatos so it was a 45 minute drive, it was awesome. 2 dogs with us , we stayed at the Normandie Cottage, we had a blast with the dogs, it was not hot but very pleasant. The beach was at a small walking distance ,water was COLD but the dogs loved it.
The cottages are like little tiny homes, lots of room for 2 big dogs ect...That is the only place for me that I remmeber ever taking our dogs on vacation and no one gave us a hard time about our 2 big dogs.

We take our dogs to rental cottages, but not the kind where one person owns a piece of land with 10 cottages on them though, they generally don't allow dogs. We rent personal cottages and just clear it with the owner first. It narrows down your choices but it's definitely an option.
