Dave Isard Webboard User Reg: 12-14-2006 Posts: 5 Loc: Offline	I have a 8 month old GSD. She has one ear that stays up most of the time then it falls to the side. I have tried the breeders suggestions, i.e. glueing foam inside the ear. The ear will be up for a while but fall again. Has anyone out there had similar experiences with ears... is there anything else I can do or should I just leave them alone???

I am also aware of the many solutions recommended to try to correct this naturally (i.e. various taping / ear form methods, etc.) I have also heard about the surgical solution. I read Ed's e-book on the subject, but I still have a question. Assuming we agree that a dog with one or both "soft" ears falls outside of conformation and breed survey standards, are there other concerns? i.e. would one or both "soft" ears impact a dog's ability to pursue sport work or "real job" (i.e. SAR) work? The reason I ask is because there is a stud who has been used quite a bit in our geographic area, who has produced this problem (the most minor IMO of the genetic problems he tends to produce - but that's another story..) and I am contacted frequently about some of his progeny, and training / sport options. This makes me a little nuts because from a working point of view, a crooked ear doesn't mean squat, yet NONE of us want our dogs to have one. Angeliques' dog has some of the best blood & to my knowledge, not known for throwing any soft ears, but there it is!

Now it makes me wonder how Big Tough Working People (like ed maybe?) learned of the pink curler + tape trick. just kidding... On a serious note - I have a bigger question. I believe the soft ear thing is genetic (I saw an entire progeny group at WDA NASS in STL with consistently soft ears - and that was the *best* of the progeny...) and I know there are other more serious genetic issues going on. Dave Isard Webboard User Reg: 12-14-2006 Posts: 5 Loc: Offline	I started taping around six months. I personally think that the dogs ear may have been damaged by our daughters sheltie as they played. Just my thought. The ear would stand up fine for a week or so then would come back down. I dont think that any more taping is going to work. She is however a great GSD. I just wish there was a way to get that ear up.

Everyone assumes she is a mix. I don't care, I didn't want to have her tail clipped. I figured if she was supposed to have no tail, God wouldn't have given her one. I say leave it alone. You got a great dog and that is all that matters!
