Monterey County California REQUIRES vets to fax in a monthly rabies vaccine report for canines, including the owners personal information. I think, and others agree, that this is so wrong but vets have no choice in the matter. And don't be fooled...This isn't about rabies, it's about revenue.
Santa Cruz County California, I believe, just enacted a mandatory spay/neuter law. I don't know the specifics.
This is the wave of the future...The nanny state telling you what you may and may not do with YOUR personal property. It sucks and it is really scary

Santa Cruz County California, I believe, just enacted a mandatory spay/neuter law. I don't know the specifics. ...
Capitola adopted it in May of 2006, which made it countywide, but most of the county has had the law for a decade.
There are at least six ways to get waivers, and while I don't suggest that this kind of government intervention is welcome or right, I do know that the law was intended to reduce the oops litters among the less responsible owners in the county. Breeders (or individuals who plan to breed), working dog owners, LEOs, service dog owners/handlers, SAR dog owners, professional trainers who board dogs while they are training them, herding dog owners, and others ....... these are all eligible for waivers.
Again, while I'm not saying this isn't a lot of government interference, it's much less heavy-handed than an across-the-board neuter law.

Connie, thanks for saying what it was intended for...over here on the right-handed coast I've never heard of it.
Is CA getting overrun with strays or something? Rabies running rampant? Why did this become an issue?
Also, at what age are they saying these animals have to be altered? What proof do they require? Was this voted on?
I smell some lawsuits on the wind....

Sometimes the laws start out as mentioned above and then the
politians screw it all up and attack everyone. CA is communist
famous.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!! |

I lived in Los gatos mountains for 7 years and we were under Santa Cruz county, and worked for Los gatos Animal Clinic, I don't ever remember a spay and neuter law.My memorie is not that great anymore, but I remember that a rabbies tag for your dog was very very important to have on hand, they would give you a citation on the spot.

Have any of you actually ever gotten a ticket for not having the rabies tags on your dogs? I always lose those things, and I've never paid for a dog license.
About the spay/neuter thing, that might be okay if it was easy enough for reputable breeders or dog sports hobbyists to get the waivers...maybe that would even be a solution to puppy mills. It'd be tricky to regulate though, I guess.

Angelique,
I think you'll get a citation anywhere if you don't have a tag.
When I was a kid I remember getting the rabies tag through the vet's office. I gather from our military clients who move into the area from elsewhere in the US that tags are still issued through vets...they seem surprised that they need to go to city hall. And our clients get pretty irked when city hall sends a letter telling them to vaccinate their dog now. So, even when we give a 3 year rabies vaccine, some pinhead in government can decide that YOUR dog must be revaccinated before the 3 year period ends. I've seen it happen.
I'm glad to hear waivers are allowed in Santa Cruz and I agree that if it helps stop careless breedings then it is a good thing. However, so many things that start out with the best of intentions end up getting bent, twisted, and distorted beyond all recognition. It isn't just California...draconian laws are popping up everywhere.

Hi Heather,
I have never been ticketed for my dog not wearing his license, but I have never been approached for that either. I do keep the tag & proof of rabies vac in my glove compartment just in case I am ever asked. I also carry it whenever traveling on vacation. I still have not licensed my new pup (procrastination is sometimes my middle name), & this will be my first time under the new ordinance. According to LA ordinance I should be able to get a waiver on neutering because my dog is a competition animal. We shall see what happens.
