My 13 month old GSD has been throwing up on and off for a while(2-4months) now. Everything is normal- she eats and drinks, her stools are firm(no blood, not runny), nothing has changed in her exercise or daily routine. I think(my fiance does too) that she is doing this, possibly, because she thinks she isn't getting enough attention. for instance, just 10 minutes ago, she was in her crate and she whined a little bit, but we wanted to leave her in for a bit longer. Well, she didn't like that and she threw up, there was also puke in there from about 20 minutes before(we left the house to grab some food), everything that she had eaten(her supper) was out and in her crate. Any suggestions or advice on what I can do? She had done this before, but she had eaten a few feminine products right before(everything came out ok on the other end). But I am at a loss with this.

I seriously doubt she's throwing up for attention. It's much more likely there's a medical problem. The fact that she whined in her crate means she was telling you she needed out, to vomit. You dismissed the signal, so she had no choice but to throw up in the crate. Has her stool been checked by a vet for worms? This would be a more probable reason for throwing up. She needs to get checked by a vet and a fresh stool sample taken in to be checked for worms. It may be some other medical problem so I wouldn't just stop at having her stool checked. She needs to go to the vet.

Your dog is young, maybe it's excitement. Especially if she's all worked up from being in the crate. This is something I'd consider AFTER bringing her to a vet.
Sandy's right, this could be a medical problem and you'd feel awful if you were saying "she just wants attention" when she should have been getting help. She could have worms, or an intenstinal blockage or any number of other things.
Dogs have other, more effective (and LOUDER ), ways of getting attention than throwing up. I don't think that's what's going on.

I also disagree that it's for attention.
I have a vague memory of reading somewhere that German shepherds are prone to some sort of condition with their esophagus where it doesn't close properly and the dog throws up their food unless they are kept upright for an hour or so after eating. I can't remember what the condition is called, sorry.
Anyway, I'd take a trip to the vet.

2-4 Months seems a long time for this not to be addressed by a vet.
This is not an attention seeking behavior as has already been before.
Also, you mentioned that she was in a crate that had old vomit in it, my guess is she had to vomit again and was signaling you and you ignored it and also, I wouldn't want to be in a confined space with my old vomit either.
There are times that whatever your doing needs to be stopped and you need to pay attention to the dog. This sounds like one of these times.
Something is going on with your dog and she needs to visit a vet.

She may still have something in her stomach that she can't digest.

Keleah,
We have 2 dogs in our club same owner ,different blooodline, different ages and different sexes.
They throw up all the time, I remember their owner always telling me that they throw up going home fropm training, at home ,regardless of the activities. Now when we had that conversation they were 2 and 3 years of age.We havent had that conversation in a while(about his dogs vomiting) but he reads this board now and then,I will ask him if they outgrew it cause they are now 4 and 6. I'll see what he tells me or if he want to comment on it, I know he took them to the vet and did all kinds of test and nothing was ever found but I don't know that oyur dog is having the same thing either. It's best to rule out medical problems first but I'll find out for you.

i would suggest you make SURE she isn't getting into garbage of some sort, thus leading to puking, and i would take her to the vet. 2-4 months of "on and off" (whatever that means) is pushing your luck a little if there's something going on inside her.
she IS NOT doing this to "get attention". she's a DOG, not a kid.

Dogs don't vomit for attention.
I too would get the dog to the vet, with months of off-and-on vomiting.
It will give you peace of mind and might save the dog from something critical and worsening.
Good luck at the vet's.

Megaesophogus, and it can be life threatening if not dealt with promptly.
And I also agree with dismissing the notion that this is an attention getter, get the dog to the vet ASAP.
