We are contemplating bringing our 2 year old Black Lab Mix inside. He has been an outside dog since we got him but we feel that he and our kids would benefit from more interaction with the family. We will have a crate for him to sleep/stay in.
My questions are:
1) Is this advisable?
2) Any advice on "house breaking".
He's a good natured, loving dog that has been easy to train. He needs more socialization.
Thanks.

We brought our older crew (2 collie mixes and 1 GSD) inside when they were about 5 years old. They were confined at times to one room with just a baby gate. No problem on house breaking, my guess was because they were brought up outside, thats where they knew to go. My older crew was a dream, they each had dogs beds and did not destruct anything, no need for crates. My 3 yr old GSD we have now, yes, he has a grate! Amazing how curious they can be.

I'm glad you are bringing your dog in, I have always raised mine inside and out .Crating is a great idea until he gets used to all the things that goes on inside a home,he's only seen it throught the windows(I'm assuming).I can't see you having many problems with potty training at all, just remeber to allow him back out several times, I am sure he'll love being part of your family pack
One thing that my kids love is , our king charles stays in their rooms a lot and hangs out with them, my 11 year old son has always wanted a dog that stayed in his room with him without having to shut the door.My 3 shepherds are always with me and staying in my sons' room if I'm somewhere else in the house, is out of the question.Let your kids enjoy your dog, they'll develop a great bond

I got a female GSD when she was three yrs old that only came out of the kennel to work. I started crate training immediatly and the house breaking went quickley and smoothly. This maybe because adult dogs have better control of thier bowels and bladder along with the fact they don't have to go as nearly as often. I was surprised on how fast she got use to living in the house

I would love to bring my female GS inside, in fact she was
inside until she got fleas. My husband doesn't want her inside
due to the fleas, I put advantage on her every month.
What else could I do to keep the fleas out of the house? The
yard was treated in October for fleas and ticks.
Suggestions?

Elaine , where do you live?
Here in Vegas , we have none so I can't offer any great suggestions other than we once when we lived in N.California, had the inside of the house sprayed. Can you spray the inside?

We are really excited. I've been letting him in some this week on lead and he has really seemed more at ease, especially around our 3 year old. He laid on the floor and actually let the 3 year old sit next to him and put his head on his side.
I really think this is something that we should have done long ago.
My plan calls for us to keep him in the crate full time initially and only take him out when we are in or are taking him for a walk or "outside". Then we will gradually let him stay out more but only when we are around.
One question is should I keep the leash on him full time?

Elaine...
Sometimes a flea product never works effectively for a particular animal or just stops working for no apparent reason. You could try switching to Frontline and see if that works better for your dog. You can also use either Frontline or Advantage once a week, every two weeks, for not more than two months if you're having a nasty outbreak of fleas.
Treating the house is a good idea...Just don't treat your dog AND spray your house at the same time. Wait a week as that is a lot of toxic stuff you are exposing your dog to at one time.

Kevin:
Yes, I would keep a leash on him to drag around until you're comfortable with him being inside and not becoming mischevious. That's particularly important with little kids around. It allows you to grab something (not the dog) and give a correction for wrong behavior quickly and effectively.
I'm glad it's going well so far.
In terms of keeping him in the crate, just be sure he gets enough exercise. A dog that's used to releasing energy on his own might get frustrated with not being able to do so if not being properly exercised.
Jen.
