I live in Florida and we have shrimp readily available. Is it ok to feed shrimp as part of the RAW diet? What if it is cooked? I know mackerel and salmon are ok but what about the shellfish: scallops, crab etc. I would obviously not give the crab shell or scallop shell.
I found a butcher who feeds his own dogs raw and has put together tubes with ground up veggies,chicken/beef,bones,tripe and fruit. Costs less than 1.30/lb. and comes in
2 lb. tubes. I already picked some up to help me and puppy get used to feeding raw but the butcher switched over a few months ago and his golden retriever is flourishing. Also found website that will ship elk and bison meat at 15.95/10 lbs plus shipping.....too expensive? We don't have elk or bison here in the Sunshine State!

I've fed leftover cooked shellfish, and right offhand can't think of a reason not to feed raw. I'll look it up later today, though, and see what I can find.
You know about no raw Pacific Northwest salmon, right? Actually, it's any fish that swim upstream to breed west of the Cascade Mountain Range...... for practical purposes to the rest of the country, that would be raw Pacific salmon.
Yes, I did know about the raw Pacific salmon, thank you Connie. I live right near the water and beach so we have access to lots of good fish. I have been trying to research but couldn't find any information about cooked shrimp or scallops or crabs for dogs. I have shrimp in my freezer that is a little freezer burned but I won't throw it out if I can feed it to my puppy.
Thank you Connie! That is a big help. I was planning on adding the cooked shrimp for variety but not do the whole meal. I am excited about the whole RAW thing but am a little nervous too. I appreciate you following up on the post - if I can figure out how to give you a star for your helpfullness, I will!
My dogs will not eat shell fish at all, only if it's the only thing they get to eat for the day but no way they like it, I know it's great for them to try all kinds of meats but are shrimps really a natural food source for them?

No, not really, but that was why I looked it up in a zillion places.
Scavengers, true, but I tend to look it up if it's unusual.
That's funny that your guys didn't like it. Mine definitely did, but then, what don't they like? They're pigs.
Well I'm not sure what my dog is going to like - I don't think I'm going to start him off with a shrimp cocktail but at some point I may put it in there as a different taste. The cat may like it better - our Maine Coon used to stick his head in our other dog's dish while he was eating. He just wanted to sample and Scout didn't mind since he would "sample" the cat's entire dinner later!

I guess that'd depend on how much you add for shipping. At $1.59, I don't think I would balk at all..... but the shipping might be huge.
Shipping depends on weight - $9.00 for 18 lbs for two day delivery includes 3lbs of dry ice - they have discretion to add more ice for $2.00. Reasonable?
