It's time for the new dogs vaccines. He's 16 months. The breeder said get the 3 yr rabies and a booster. I called the vet and the receptionist asked which booster. I had no idea there was more than 1 kind. I am also wondering if I should go ahead and get the bordatella because the place I board them insists on it. I have no travel plans in the immediate future but will eventually go somewhere for a weekend.
I have always just let the vet go ahead with the vaccines and now that I have found this site and read up I don't plan on vaccinating them yearly.
I emailed the breeder with the booster question and she hasn't responded. His apt is tomorrow @ 1130.
Can anyone give me a clue about this?
thanks.

I guess I would postpone the appointment. You probably don't want to make vaccination decisions overnight, right? JMO.
What has he already had? What did you mean about "early"?

The booster they are probably talking about is the combo DHPPC...Distemper, Parvo, etc.
There is a ton of info on this site about vaccinosis and it scared the hell out of me. Plus, when you see how many dogs and cats out there have thyroid problems, cancer, skin issues....No thanks! No doubt someone will give you excellent links to studies and articles about the risks of vaccines (I'm not computer-saavy enough) but for me, Cindy Rhodes made it real easy when she said she'd rather spend the money treating a case of kennel cough or parvo than spend thousands of dollars over the course of a dog's lifetime treating the effects of vaccinosis (to paraphrase very roughly).
My dog will get a rabies booster because it is the law but I don't plan on EVER giving him another vaccination if I can possibly help it.

By early, I meant before I had any set vacation plans.
She told me he was current and only needed rabies and a booster. She thought she sent me his records but I haven't received them yet. She just had a baby so I'm sure she has her hands full.
If he's over due for the shots (due in dec) is that going to mess anything up in his system? I can just go and get the rabies and thenn a pet store for the booster.

I don't get boosters .... just the rabies as required by law. (I'm not advising; I'm just saying that I don't necessarily follow the vet's post card reminders.)
Bordatella is an "as needed" thing, and you can decide on that when you get closer to knowing when you need it, right?
Rabies....... do you know what he has already had? Did he have a one-year rabies as a puppy? What is required by law where you live? Is live-vaccine required? Or can you use killed-vaccine?
If I wasn't sure of what I was getting and what he had alread had, etc., I'd postpone and then get all my info. JMO!

Here's a good overview:
http://www.caberfeidh.com/Revax.htm
If you scroll down, you'll see kennel cough, and the boosters your breeder is saying to get.
(Again, rabies is a legal thing, and you'll want to get those facts.)

Help! All of these discussions of perfectly healthy puppies dying from vaccinations has terrified me. I just got a 9 week old golden retriever named Ally last week. The vet has already got her scheduled for her "puppy shots" next week which, as she told me, would need to be given every 3 weeks until their 1st birthday, then every year after that. What exactly is included in the every-3-weeks shots? After researching, I have decided against yearly vaccinations, but it's this first year I am worried about. I have searched the forums for my answer, I just haven't found the plain black and white response I'm looking for. I'm just really really nervous from reading all about vaccinosis and I want to know what shots my puppy REALLY needs and how often. Please help!

Victoria,
Are you certain your vet said every 3 weeks until 1 year?
I've never heard of any vaccine protocol that called for that many shots and if she DID say that then RUN and find another vet.

I am certain she said every 3 weeks, but thinking about it, I can't recall exactly what the visits were for. She spoke to me about vaccines in the same visit, but perhaps she was talking about heartworm shots, or something? I've been recommended to this vet by 3 other people, and she was named the best vet in the city by our local newspaper. Maybe it was a misunderstanding on my part?
