Hi,
My female GS had her first heat at 8 months old this past September.
I noticed back in late Nov she had some gray clear discharge in her urine maybe foamy looking too. It seemed bladder related and it happened three times all in about 2 weeks then seemed to go away. Now I notice she has some blood dots coming out. Im not sure if its in her pee this time, its very unnoticeable for the past 2 days. I am wondering if this could be pyometra.
I am worried to death. I purchased her as breeder. She is a long coat 80 pound girl and is very nice looking.
I have a vet appointment but wanted some info. There is no odor to the blood and no pus. Is it possible this could be heat again after 4 months?? She is very healthy and acting normal. She always drank alot of water but she is not drinking extra.
Does anyone have a female that cycles like this? Is it likely that her hormones are regulating from being young? I also was told that 8 months for a GS was odd so perhaps this might be another heat cycle. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Heather,
My dobe had her first heat at 10 months and lasted for almost 4 weeks. I don't know if 8 months for GSD is odd or not. However, I didn't see the same symptoms after her heat as you are discribing. I think a vet visit is a good idea hopefully it's nothing. Good luck,
Lynn
Our female had an open Pyo last summer. The "standard syptoms" she exhibited were 1) very stinky puss oozing out and 2) excessive water drinking. The symptom she did NOT exhibit was a departure from her normal enthusiastic attitude. You never would have guessed she had such a dangerous infection based on her attitude.
Having gone through that scare, I would go to the vet and be safe rather than sorry any day. (and you already said that's what you are doing - I think you are wise) While the symptoms you describe don't scream Pyo to me, what do I know? And it sounds like there might be some other problem based on what you are seeing.
Best wishes - please let us know what you find with the vet. I sure know what it feels like to be worried sick about this stuff.
I took care of a female with exact same thing, she ws 4 years old, had the surgery and spayed. But it was a close call.
As far as a female having her heat after 4 months is possible, some females have heat once a year and others every 6 months and some 4months.And some none at all.Take her to the vet don't wait to get the answers here, I think the sooner you get that done the best you'll dog will be.
I hope all comes out ok for you
Hi Eveyone who gave me advice. My girl is bleeding watery and heavier now with no odor. I think she is having a heat. I have my vet appointment still lined up for tomorrow but does anyone think I should cancle?? Its definitly not a bladder infection and seems not to be pyo.
Heather
I also wanted to ask since I am new to owning a GS and I will be new to breeding my female. Does anyone agree that if heat cycles are every 4 months theres a more chance for pyo? I would think that some breeders give antibiotics after a heat. Does anyone do this and what kind should be used? I am familar with Baytril but I know its a heavy drug and should not be used unless of severe infections. Is it safe to use a certain type after every heat to ward off infections? Thank you
I thinks it's your call, no one could say "don't take to the vet"
if it makes you feel better go ahead but if it were me, I wouldn't I simply think that she is starting her heat, that's all.
It's up to you!
Hi,
Thank you! I asked my vet and they sugested that its most likley her heat like I had thought so I cancled. Guess I have a girl that will cycle sooner then some. It looks like a heat to me but I apreciate all the replies.
