I woke this morning to a terrible smell coming from my home office, where I placed my dog's crate. Unfortunately, when I investigated, I found my poor 7mth old GSD Judge standing miserably in a crate with diaharea splashed all through crate.
He will see vet later today but was wondering if this was caused by my ignorance. I switched Judge to All Natural Raw Diet over the last week with fantastic results. Great stools, healthy, loves the food, etc., but yesterday I fed him our leftover, a large bowl of cooked turkey meat, thinking that this was OK with a Raw Diet to feed real food, even if cooked.
Was this a big NO NO on my part?
I honestly don't get the feeling he's having any other health issues because he has looked great, but I knew something was not quite right when I couldn't get him to potty as normal yesterday afternoon and eve. I WILL HAVE HIM CHECKED, EITHER WAY, because of the dangers of what very loose stool could mean.
I'm pretty confident this was just a rookie move on my part, though

It maybe that the dog is detoxing.

IME, the biggest cause for diarrhea in raw-fed dogs is too MUCH food, not necessarily what the food IS. This seems especially true in the early stages of transition. Every time I tried to push my luck w/my APBT, I regretted it. The key was small amounts. Also, I wouldn't give him so much cooked food at the same time as transitioning him to raw. Table scraps are no biggie, probably, but as you said "a large bowl," may be a bit much to handle all at once.
Keep in mind you will see some stool variations during the transition, and this is not a sign of ill health, rather it's a sign that the body is cleansing itself, but IMO, at seven mos, he shouldn't be detoxing sooo blatantly, and the turkey is probably the trigger. Watch (as you're doing) for other signs of illness; if there are none, chalk it up to transition/detox and be sure to keep him hydrated.
Keep in mind less food is needed when it's the RIGHT food. People sometimes forget and feed the same amount of raw that they would kibble, not thinking that kibble has so much filler that they're actually greatly increasing the dog's food intake. Then they think raw food makes their dog sick .

Okay, I did not know about the 'too much food' scenario. As far as the stool transition, I believe we have already completely made the Raw transition. Judge has not had kibble in two weeks and has had nothing but perfect stools since the first couple of days, so I don't think it's anything to do with the 'transition' itself.
Thanks so much for the wisdom.

Then I'd maybe wait 'til tomorrow to take him to the vet, PROVIDED HE HAS NO OTHER SYMPTOMS AND YOU KEEP HIM HYDRATED. Not that I don't think you should be on the safe side, but if this is something he's never had before, and ate a lot of it, you could be in for a big waste of money. If the diarrhea lingers, I'd quit blaming the turkey and seek assistance. Good luck and keep us posted!

A couple of times that I've gone overboard with the amount of food I fed my pup, he threw up also. As for cooked turkey, well whatever we didn't eat at Christmas went to waste because my pup didn't have a good reaction to the small amount of cooked turkey I gave him. Go figure. I thought it would be a special treat for him, as he does like cooked beef, but turned out not to be the case. Maybe next year I'll try again.

My dog always has to transition slowly to a new diet. Maybe you gave him too much turkey too quickly.

Don't forget too that we use oils ,butter to cook our meat and alot of that is in the meats. Not good if you want solid stool!
I would skip his meals for one day.Go back to raw and don't add too many things to it, let his digestive tracts go back to normal
