Ok, this is going to sound weird and it'll be hard to explain. My husband was playing tug with the puppy (13 weeks) and was sort of "spinning" him. Not for very long just 2 or 3 circles and not too fast. Anyway, he sort of tripped and landed with his back legs splayed, with his belly flat on the ground and his hips spread. Picture him squished to visualize what I mean!
He yelped and we immediately picked him up and put him right on his feet and he was okay; but shouldn't he have been able to prevent landing that kind of way? I've never seen another puppy land that way, except maybe an 8 week old. It seemed like his legs just sort of gave out. It seems to imply a sort of "looseness" in his joints.
Doesn't that mean his hips are kind of weak? Or are puppies of his age just sort of weak naturally and he's normal and they'll strengthen with age?
The vet said he did have an uneven gait on his back legs but that he wouldn't worry in a pup that's 13 weeks. He might not, but I do! Do you all agree with the vet?
Hi Sara, maybe you guys just played a little to hard for the puppy at his age. If it was me i'd take it easy with the little guy and wait and watch. When your swinging him off the ground the only way for him to hold on is with 13 week old mouth strength! Good luck and i hope all turns out well for you and your pup,
AL
What kind of floor was he on? My 3 yr old did the same thing last week (I was not spinning a 99lb dog, lol!) and yelped too, but I honestly think it was the smashing of his, um, family jewels more than a hip thing. I have wood floors and he was running to jump onto the ottoman-both no-no's-and the ottoman slid out from under him and he landed sans cushion on the floor. I winced, but he seemed fine a second later.
Be careful w/little ones' hips, but don't drive yourself crazy over the way he walks now. I've seen many clumsy-looking pups who fall all over themselves mature into healthy-hipped dogs. Prelim him at 6mos or so if you're really paranoid, and check into Ester C if you're concerned about him having truly bad hips.
