I just picked up a new boy, a 1-year-old ACD who is going to be my obedience prospect. He presents an interesting challenge for me because he comes to me at a year old, his drive and grip hasn't really been cultivated. So he's going to give me some good experience in building drive, focus, and grip in a dog that I am not working with from a puppy. I find the drive and grip much easier to develop from a baby.
If this boy demonstrates an aptitude for the bitework portion of SchH, we may compete in SchH as well. It will all depend on what I can cultivate. This will be the first dog that I a) haven't had from a puppy and/or b) didn't have the natural drives for the work I tend to gravitate towards.
This boy DOES love to play with a ball and he will happily retrieve and carries a ball everywhere.
Thank you! Actually his looks are deceiving... He's such a happy, fun-loving boy! He can be a real dope. LOVES to cuddle. Seems to me like the sort of ACD that is going to take time to grow into his aloofness.
Thank you Melissa and Angelique... I'm DEFINITELY going to be going for CKC Obedience titles, possibly AKC (if I can budget the travel time in) and ideally SchH. For fun I want to get out to a few disc dog trials with him just to say we did, ya know?
Not sure about herding but will give it a go with either this boy (or my other boy, the pup) if I can find a good yet affordable place once I move.
