Just wondering, how cold do you figure it has to be before it's TOO COLD to leave your dog crated in your vehicle for any length of time?
I have my doubts with my dogs it EVER gets too cold! They'd sleep in snowbanks all winter if they had a choice, I'm convinced of it. But do you feel it ever gets too cold for them to be left (crated) in the vehicle?
Naturally I'm talking about dogs with winter coats. Maybe not HUSKIES or MALAMUTES, but shepherds, mals, or in my case ACD's...
Well when I was in the arctic with the army some memebers of the local community had dog sleds and teams to get around. The dogs slept outside curled up in individual balls on the snow. In the morning the sled master would whistle and out of these large snow balls would pop up the dogs that had been laying in the exact same spot the night before. They'd shake themselves off and were just fine!
I leave Riot, the ACD puppy (who isn't a BABY puppy, he's 5 months now) crated in my SUV during the day while I'm at work. I go out around 3:00pm to let him relieve himself. So far it's been great, as he hasn't EVER had to rely on papers, and he's almost old enough that I can leave him home (crated) during the day.
And it certainly isn't Arctic temperatures here!!!
Our dogs have been in the car when it's gotten down to between 8-10 degrees F at night with no problem. It helps that there has been at least 2 dogs in the car to generate body heat.
I got an insulated kennel cover from Cabalas and I put Styrofoam insulation between the kennel and the cover and I put straw in the kennel. My GSD hasn't had any problems through the winter.
The water in the kennel doesn't freeze so it's at least above 32 degrees inside her crate.

Oh wow, they make those?! Gotta check it out... I was planning on making one myself but if it's already done for me, all the better!
We leave our dogs in the car plenty of times(except with the heat) but in the winter here ,we've had no problems. You can put a cotton balnket for them to curl up in but they seem to stay warm just fine.
