On rawhide chew bones...are they okay for 12 wk old pups?
Also, should I be using Levi's dog food for treats or can I use otehr natural treats?
To update, he is doing wonderfully. However, he is not very ball motivated. He does love to tug o war and he does love food. Are there any particular methods to use with those motivators? He is VERY VERY food motivated. He also loves to chase as long as it is a toy he can sink his teeth into he can't really do that with balls.
His ear has crossed over the top of his head which is encouraging, at least it is moving around now.

Would not recommend Rawhide. What about a gum bar or a kong instead?
If you do a search on rawhide on this site, you will find discussions on why it is not recommended for any dog.

IMO , raw hide is a no no, give him big marrow bones, chicken feet, things that don't have hide in them.
If he like to play tug, get a tug for puppies , I think ed sells those, play tug o war, and use that tug as a reward, play...later on you can use it during your obedience as a reward too, to get his attention when you need it ect... Sometimes at 15 weeks a ball is too awkward to hold in there mouth. If he loves to chase things , he'll come around for the ball when his mouth can hold it better.Have you tried a Kong?

I'm with Carol & Angelique. My girl did really well with bully sticks (actually a bull penis, usually smoked...honest) They did a great job of keeping her occupied, just be careful not to give too many because they contain a lot of fat.

Eventually, you can make sure he loves the ball, but he is a small baby right now. Enjoy his puppiness, be sure not to put too much pressure on him, he will be grown before you know it! You can take a ball & with him right in front of you (& you on the ground too), roll the ball towards him, but grab it before it gets to him & roll it back towards you. Watch his eyes, he should start to follow the ball with his eyes, dart it around a bit, (make prey with the ball). Don't leave the ball for him by himself, this game must always come from you.

I will never give rawhide again. My dog almost choked on it when he was a pup. He loved it, chewed off a chunk, and it got stuck in his throat. I have heard this from others. I then gave him raw beef bones, and he loved them and had no problems.

Soup bones are great for pups; I'm sure your little guy will love them
For adult dogs you may want to watch our for tooth damage. Some dogs will clamp onto bones and squeeze with such force that they actually chip their teeth on soup bones!
Throw them out after a day or two; they get hard and brittle when they dry out. Plus it really hurts to step on a marrow bone when you're walking around barefoot in the dark
Ah yes, and keep an eye on how much marrow he's getting. Some pups seem fine with it, while others will get diarrhea from eating too much of it, seeing as it's so fatty.
Have fun, and remember to take pictures!!

Ditto exactly what Yuko said about the bones. I have pics of Lear munching on beef marrow bones (soup bones) the day I got him at 8 1/2 weeks. It could be my imagination, but I could swear those bones further sharpened those already razor sharp puppy teeth!
Here's an article Ed Frawley wrote that may help you with the ball issue, give you some tips: http://www.leerburg.com/qapup.htm#ball

Robbin-my experience is that the big compressed rawhide bones don't cause the same kind of problems as the little rolled sticks, or non compressed types. My pup gnaws on the end of his for hours but never gets chunks, just wet tiny pieces.
I think that there are potential problems with any recreational chewing object for a dog. Marrow bones can causee problems because of the fat content and splintering if they're too old, pigs ears apparently are full of preservatives and fat and junk (I just stopped giving my dog them), sticks can puncture gums, tennis balls cause tooth decay and impaction, kongs often aren't interesting or only last for a short time if the dog's good at getting stuff out. Greenies are bad. Etc etc.
My basic attitude is watch your dog and find something that works for you and suits your dog's chewing style with minimum risk. Nothing's 100% safe for 100% of dogs,,at least not that I could find.
