Kipp has a "doggy" smell to him, and I'm trying to figure out if I can do anything about it, or just have to live with it!
He is outdoor in a kennel during the day. In his kennel he has a cedar dog house. Inside the house for insulation/bedding there is 1 1/2 inches of styrofoam, and straw on top of that. At night he is crated in the house, no bedding (he's a chewer at times). During the course of the day his exercise/activity is about the same as my other dog, who is in the house and doesn't "smell like a dog".
The only other difference is diet - Missy eats raw and Kipp eats Canidae. But Missy was on Canidae for a while and didn't have a doggy smell then either.
Both only get bathed as needed (when they roll in something, the barnyard is extra sloppy, etc).
Is there something I can be doing different?

Some males pee on their front legs when they raise the hind leg to pee, could it be that since your other dog is a female? Just a thought, I can't come up with anything else!

My friend took in a foster I had and he's a Gordon Setter mix. Exact same problem.
I've been told, don't know this for a fact, that dogs that are water dogs are "oilier" than other dogs and therefore absorb more odors. This could be urban legend, I'll have to look it up, but it sure would explain why that Gordie mix smelled so doggy, no matter what we did.
Do you have a water dog?

Thanks for the ideas.
I'm pretty sure he's not peeing on himself. Kipp is a Border Collie, just like Missy, but he has a smooth coat instead of rough like her. Maybe the difference in coat? I'm pretty sure he doesn't have an ear infection - ears look normal, not red at all, and they don't smell any different than the rest of him.
I want to get him on a raw diet in another month or so. It will be interesting to see if a change in diet helps at all.
I got him about 4 months ago, and switched him from a kibble w lots of corn, to a L&R kibble, then to Canidae. His coat went from almost greasy feeling, to soft and smooth w/ mimimal brushing and baths in about a month. But I do want to get him on raw eventually.

I bathe my dobe weekly because he has the same problem. He and his crate start to stink. He eats raw and is not into rolling in anything weird but I think with him it is that he licks his paws and it is the smell of wet saliva that gets me. He does it with any bedding I have in his crate as well so it's definitely licking related because the wet part of the bedding gets stinky. He still has puppy breath though thankfully. I have seen doggie deodorant in some pet boutiques you could try that heh.

Do you feed raw? I have 4 dogs in the house and do not have a doggy smell at all. People actually comment on that. Can't believe the house does not smell like dog. Raw fed dogs don't seem to have that 'doggy smell'.

Doggy smell? what doggy smell?
After you check with the vets, look at the diet, you smell like what you eat, My wife nearly didn't marry my because I cook with real garlic and of course there was a bit of an odor in my esssence. What worked was I started cooking for her and she no longer notices it any more. I recently got a kennel dog that stunk badly even after a bath but after a while on the new diet that included fish the odor left. Again, diet change may be in order when cleared by the Doc.

Hi Mara and Magdelena. I can only speak from my limited personal experience, but prior to raw feeding our Beagle stunk to high heaven. Especially around his head, for whatever reason. That's a big Mommy problem when he likes to share my pillow with me at night!!
Through more careful observation, I know that some of that stink came from him rolling in dead stuff (little dead stuff like frogs, small birds, etc.)
I have no idea how or why this works, because he still rolls in little dead stuff. But...after a few months on raw, that distinctive Beagle stentch just started going away. Don't get me wrong - he doesn't smell like a bouquet of flowers or anything. But I swear that dog used to be Level 10 stinky, and now he's Level 1. God Bless Raw Chicken (and the supplements, but you know what I mean).
Now if we can only get rid of the poison ivy that is rampant around here come spring, I will be happy to share my pillow with him forever.

If raw feeding cuts down on the doggy odor, then I don't ever want to know what my Dobe would smell like if he ate kibble. Yikes!
Like Magdelena, I think my dog's saliva is the culprit. His teeth as white as ivory and his gums look healthy (thank you RMBs) so I don't think it is a periodontal disease related smell. We noticed that the more he licks himself that the more he stinks.
Oddly, my brother's male Australian Cattle Dog, who is fed a diet of kibble and leaves hair everywhere, does not have the doggy smell!! I always ask if he just got a bath and the answer is invariably no.
