Proposed Texas House Bill 421 requires K9 units to be equipped with heat monitors. Does any other state require this? I have seen too many officer totally rely on these units rather than rely on common sense.I believe from my experience more dogs die from monitor failure than common sense. What do ya'll think. See the bill at http://www.tleca.org
I have them in all 45 canine units. Like anything mechanical or electronic, sure it can malfunction. In my opinion it's like using the excuse of not wanting to be trapped in a burning car as the reason people don't wear seat belts. It's a fact, seat belts save lives. In my opinion it's the same with heat sensors, they save lives. We've not experienced any equipment malfunctions in the past 10 years we've been using them. While I can't say the same for operator error, I certainly think its' money well spent.

I am certainly not a fan of more and more legislation.
We bought these for our units and all failed to work correctly. Common sense is the key to a safe dog, not legislation
Kevin, I agree about the legislation. Sounds like typical legislators pandoring to somebody's whim.
As for the heat sensors, I'm surprised you've had so many fail. Ours work, when they handlers turn them on and do the function check as suggested. I can, off the top of my head, recall at least 5 instances where they've probably saved a dogs life. We've never lost a dog to heat in a vehicle. Granted, we don't get the heat you get (of course your's is a dry heat) but we do get some pretty hot summers here as well.

It's a joke about the dry heat folks.
Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
Here in Florida its a wet heat:-). Seriously, mine worked perfectly at least 3 times when the radiator, a/c and electric fans malfunctioned. Just one malfuntion, or no heat sensor at all could have been disasterous.
Well on re-reading the proposal it seems I can keep my option to park under a shade tree or just leave the dog at home on hot days. I work for the District Attorney's Office, not listed as an agency required to have the units anyway.
I would just have a hard time trusting my partner's life to a piece of electronic equipment. Working narcotics all these years and using electronic equipment everyday has taught me to always have a backup. (shadetree and windows down)
Hey Kevin how ya been?
