Lancashire Police recently confirmed rumours that they are to reduce the number of Police Dogs and handlers in the county. Current numbers are meant to be 35 and this is being cut to 21 (not that many years ago there were around 50 & Lancashire's Dog School was world famous). This is causing great concern for both public and officer safety (NB in reality the cuts will leave only 16 operational frontline officers....when you figure in sickness,holidays,rest days,court appearances,training courses,hours of form-filling after an arrest etc. then you can easily forsee there being times where there is only ONE dog handler to cover the whole county (3075 sqkm with a population of over 1 million)and Sod's Law says he will be at one end of the county when needed at the other.

The past handler who responds after the second article reflects what many of us have seen in our careers about police management.
Though the unit I work for has not been subjected to cuts we have been denied funding, asked to do more with less, and told we're not on the front lines essentially by management. Yet, the opposit is felt by the rank and file who rub shoulders with us day in and day out.
This appears to be the case all over... budget cuts, reduced staffing etc. My budget here at the Colorado Department of Corrections has gone from over $20,000 per year (pre 9/11) to $2500 today, with more cuts on the horizon. I pay for most of my equipment and feed out of my own pocket. But I love my job, and my dog... It can only get better.
