I would appreciate any help on how to get a narc dog GSD to keep from bitng and scratching many items before hiting source. The dog finds the hides (training / real searches) w/ no problem and is very accurate and demonstrative (heavy sniff, nose poke then scratch) but bites and scratches at many softer items (chairs, headrests, luggage, etc.)throughout the search. This behavior is clearly not an indication to scent but seems to be frustration, excitement, etc. We have tried ignoring the behavior and moving him on w/o negative commands and primary reward but still run into this problem. Any ideas would be great!
If the work is well grounded you can set him up for a correction, a good one, not a series of nagging corrections which may just create conflict and actually worsen the problem.
There is nothing wrong with corrections in the narc work if it is to stop inapropriate behaviors or distraction. The correction should be into the item the dog is biting not back and away from it to impose the opposition reflex into the actions of the dog.
Just be sure that the correction for the behavior is one that works whenever used. It also must be followed by getting the dog back into a search that is quickly and easily successful for the dog.
Thank you for the advice Kevin. The narc trainer had avoided giving correction in the past for fear of taking some drive out of the dog but I don't believe it will happen in this case (intense and driven on the search / find). It makes sense to correct him into the object as opposed to away. Would the e-collar be helpful or not, being that you couldn't really correct him towards the objects he is biting? Thanks again for the help.
