Finn
April 7, 2002 - February 1, 2007
It is with an incrediably sad heart that I announce the passing of my Finn. Finn was only 4.5 years old but had a kidney disorder and his kidneys finally gave out. A study on Finn's disorder showed dogs lived a range of 200-766 days after being diagnosed. Finn, true to his cattledog self, lived 772 wonderful days after being diagnosed.
Finn was not a schutzhund dog. He just could not get the idea that the helper was not to be kissed Finn was however a fantastic obedience dog having ranked in the top three ACDs in obedience each year that he was in competition. He was also the first ACD to become a UKC weight pulling champion - all 35 pounds of him. But beyond these successes, Finn was my beloved friend. My dogs are my family and I feel like I have lost a child. He truly will be missed beyond words.
Finn went downhill last Sunday, spent until Wednesday at the vet and than Wenesday I took him home to spend a day doing the things he loved. I even set up a sprinkler in the bathtub so he could snap the water as he so loved to do. We spent a final day together with me pouring my heart out to him before the vet came to my house to ease his pain. There is a hole in my heart - and my family - right now that only time will ease the pain of.
Give your dogs a rub for Finn and if you live in a warm area, turn on your sprinkler for your dogs in Finn's honor

Ingrid, what a beautiful tribute to your friend.
I'm sorry for your loss... it sounds like he had a great life while it lasted though!
He looks like an awesome and fun dog in those photos! I love the spunky yet gentle expression in his eyes in the portrait shot. Haha, and what an athlete he is - love the sprinkler pouncing photo too!
Well, it's too frozen for sprinklers here now, but I gave my puppy a hug in honour of your Finn.
I hope you rest in peace Finn...

Ingrid, I can imagine the hurt you feel. I'm so sorry about Finn.
The photo of him jumping over the sprinkler is just beautiful.
I will turn on my water hose today for my pup, and to heck with the mud.

Ingrid, I am so sorry for your loss. The ACD's are a "runner-up" dog for me next to GSD's Love those dogs. I've always enjoyed your posts and information. Finn will be in your heart forever.
I loved this part of your tribute statement:
Finn was not a schutzhund dog. He just could not get the idea that the helper was not to be kissed
I lost my GSD in December to kidney failure as well (if you could forward any information about that study, or any reading you have on it, if you have the time, I'd appreciate it) But I also had a friend lose her dog the same time. She just sent me this poem, don't know if you've seen it or not, but I liked it...
WHEN TOMORROW STARTS WITHOUT ME
Author Unknown
When tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
Remembering how I'd lay my head
In your lap that special way.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me.
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name
And petted me with her hand.
She said my place was ready,
In Heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.
But, as I turned to heel away,
A tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I never thought
That I would have to die.
I had so much to live for,
So many sits and downs to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving you.
I thought about our lives together,
I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.
Remember how I'd nudge your hand,
And poke you with my nose?
The frisbee I would gladly chase,
The bad guy, I'd "bark and hold".
If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for awhile,
I'd wag my tail and kiss you,
Just so I could see you smile.
But, then I fully realized,
That this could never be;
For emptiness and memories
Will take the place of me.
And when I thought of treats and toys,
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did,
My dog-heart filled with sorrow.
But then I walked through Heaven's gate,
And felt so much at home;
As God looked down and smiled at me,
From His beautiful golden throne.
He said, "This is eternity,
And now we welcome you,
Today your life on earth is past,
But here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last;
For you see, each day is the same day,
There's no longing for the past.
Now you have been so faithful,
So trusting, loyal and true;
Though there were times you did things,
You knew you shouldn't do.
But good dogs are forgiven,
And now at last you're free;
So won't you sit here by my side,
And wait right here with me?"
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart.
For every time you think of me,
I'm right there, in your heart.

Ingrid,
Finn was a devilishly handsome dog, you can just see the personality in his expression.I'm so sorry for your loss. They just don't live long enough, do they?
one of my favorite quotes:
Brothers and Sisters,
I bid you beware,
of giving your heart
to a dog
to tear........Rudyard Kipling
