I would like to have my GSD OFA certified. I have talked to local vet's and I have been given the prices of $150.00 to $1200.00 for the x-rays. It is a very wide range for the x-rays. I was wondering if anyone would like to tell me what they paid to have there x-rays done. Also some vet referrals would be nice. I am located in Colorado. Thanks again for everyone’s help.

$1200 for X-rays??? Holy cow that is really expensive.
At our hospital a "normal" x-ray (2 views) is $140...OFA is somewhat more (don't have the exact price in my head)...maybe $250 tops. These are California prices, if that helps.
talk to some of your local breed clubs and agility clubs and ask them who in town is good at taking xrays for OFAs. getting good films is a skill that not all vets have. then of those recommended vets, go to the one who charges least.
i'm in montana and i'm sure i didn't pay even $150, but vet charges are less here than most of the rest of the country.
Definitely do what Alice recommended, I contacted the OFA to get a lists of vets they recommend or have experience with in my area for preliminary x-rays and they told me any vet can take the x-rays. It was not the answer I was looking for In my area an x-ray generally runs at $100 or above, so it really depends on that, plus vet fees, delivery charges and about $35 for the hips and elbows review by the OFA.
I paid $300 for the Xray with great news and another fee to OFA and got my OFA Number.
Terry you can't OFA a dog that young and at 10 months ,that's a waste of money to even Xray for hips at that age ,I don't Xray until 18 months or older.Unless your dog is showing a problem in his hips. But Sometimes you get bad news at a young age that really a dog is not even done growing, how can you determine that he has bad hips.Unless they are so bad?
As I stated in my e-mail the xrays were not OFA. My guy (Coach) was favoring his left rear leg. I originally thought it might be from training or from rough housing with my 4 yr old Golden Ret. But the problem persisted and a member of our club saw it and alerted me to it. I took Coach to the vet for the hip and he was xrayed. Unfortunately the xray clearly shows that the femoral head did not form and so he will never be OFA'd, will never be bred and his competition days are over. The xrays were sent off to an expert and I am currently waiting his conclusions so that I can decide a course of action. He is currently not exhibiting any signs of being in pain or discomfort, other then slightly favoring his leg when he walks. He still jumps and runs on his own and still delights in annoying my Golden Ret..
He will probably require surgery sometime in the future and on a teachers salary that is going to be something that I will have to try and save for. I did not bring him to the Vet to have his hips OFA'd. I know that that is not done until they are two. He had an existing problem that nessecitated the xrays. I am just hoping that I get some good news and that I can wait a little while before getting any surgery.
Did not mean to confuse anyone about why I had him xrayed.

My pup was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia at 4 months so I understand what you are feeling. I'm so sorry about the bad news. My dog will also probably require an expensive surgery at some point (total hip replacement) and it is really heartbreaking.
I got a ton of excellent advice from the members here on what to do and what not to do to minimize the damage. What was suggested to me has really helped my pup. I hope the specialist has better news for you
Was that for the brute in your posts? I would think 150 to get him on the table
no, it was for the sweetie in my posts. his breeder is in fla. and she is always amazed at how cheap my vet bills are here. (knock on wood). i think she said where she is it is common to pay $250-400 for films.
by point of comparison, a simply office visit is only $25-30 here.
