Lately I have been observing bleeding and cracking around my 11 year old shepherds nose.At first i thought it was a cut but now i think it is just very dry and cracking from the severe cold weather.Any thoughts on this. Has anyone else had this problem with their dogs? Any thoughts or feedback would really help I was wondering if a cream or ointment might help with the severe dry nose, but than again he probably would just lick it off, oh well!
Our GSD gets this and it seems to be from excessive licking. It could be caused by a food allergy or it could just be an obsessive habit. We changed food and her nose healed up for several months but then went back to being as bad as ever. And ointments don't work because as you expected they just lick it off.
I posted about my parents dog awhile back. His nose cracks badly in the winter. Gets better in the summer but still is there. We have noticed using virgin Coconut Oil (get it a health food store) on his nose helps quite a bit, plus if they lick it off it's no big deal. In fact, virgin Coconut Oil is great. I recommend either a product made by Tropical Traditions, or NOW Food company. NOW is available at most health food stores. Coconut Oil remains solid below 76 degrees. It melts when it is applied to the nose. Here is a list of things it is good for...
Help you lose weight, or maintain your already healthy weight
Reduce your risk of heart disease
Lower your cholesterol
Improve conditions in those with diabetes and chronic fatigue
Improve Crohn’s, IBS, and other digestive disorders
Prevent other disease and routine illness with its powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents
Increase metabolism and promote healthy thyroid function
Boost your daily energy
Rejuvenate your skin and prevent wrinkles
My 4 year old German Sehpherd male developed a dry, cracking nose for the time this fall: and it's only on one side. The vet, who is also his breeder suggested petroleum jelly. While he licks some of it off, enough is getting absorbed that it is helping the dry nose.
I felt sorry for you guys talking about dry noses on our beloved friends and all that BRRRR snow, As far as coconuts go, we are loaded here in sunny Fla. Maybe I could send a few up your way. I know.....we have our bad weather too..ha ha
