Does anyone know the facts on avacados? Is the meat, pit, plant leaves, toxic? Some websites say to feed the meat part to your dog. Mmmmm. Some say they are toxic. Some dog foods even say they have them in their ingredients. Just curious. They seem like they would have good fats in them. I just bought Eat Drink and Wag your Tail and I see nothing mentioned in there on it.

Not sure but it is an interesting question. Will be nice to know to file in the RAW library I am building so that my dogs get everything they need.
Good Avacados are hard to get here in my little part of the world, so I have never considered sharing with the dogs.

Well, if they're toxic my dog died some time ago and I've been dealing with his ghost because I have an avocado plant on my backyard and any time one avocado falls from the plant my dog eats it and uses the seed as a toy.

They are toxic to dogs (and horses and some other animals, too).
QUOTE: Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as Persin. The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic. .... The primary concern in dogs is with gastrointestinal (GI) irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects occur in dogs that have scavenged on significant quantities of fruit, branches or other material from the plant. Birds and rodents appear to be particularly sensitive, and can develop respiratory distress, generalized congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart, and possibly death from consuming avocado. END
from the ASPCA poison site (and many other sites that list canine poisons). http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_apcc_dyk#2
The problem increases with the amount eaten, and I'm sure many dogs eat one or two with no obvious ill effects. Also, the effect can vary from dog to dog.
JMO, from what I have read over the years.

P.S. Grapes (and raisins) are poisonous to dogs, too, since we are on the subject. So is the actual plant that tomatoes grow on, as well as the unripe (green) tomatoes.
Of course, there are things we all know about, like chocolate, but these others (and a BIG warning about auto antifreeze, which tastes sweet to dogs) are good to spread the word about, since not everyone knows.

Connie is right. I think it's like a lot of substances that are poisonous to dogs. You may get lucky (dog is fine) & you might not (dog is dead). Personally, I don't really like playing Russian roulette.

Yes, I'm sure. I linked to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) above.
Also,
http://kgkat.tripod.com/avocado.html
(Scroll down to "Traditionally, veterinarians have considered the toxic chemical to be restricted to the leaves, bark, pits and skin of the avocado tree. However, more recent literature has reported health problems after fruit consumption" and "Other cases of animal poisonings have been reported in mice, rabbits, dogs and in birds.4-6 Drying of the plant does not modify the toxic chemical(s) in avocado."

QUOTE:
The avocado is very dangerous to all animals – the fruit, leaves, stem, and pit are all considered toxic parts of the plant. The toxic substance in the Avocado is called persin, which is a fatty acid derivative. Although poisonous to both cats and dogs, this plant is particularly deadly to birds. This is also a proven poison to various other types of animals including: goats, sheep, horses, cattle, rabbits and even fish! Ingestion of the avocado plant can lead to cardiovascular problems, and often results in death. This plant is highly toxic, and in animals symptoms can range vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, generalized congestion, fluid accumulation around the heart, and heart failure. The avocado is deadly and should not be fed to any pet under any circumstances. END
