Sounds to me like you handled it well! Sounds like you needed to kick the dog; I say do whatever you have to to protect your puppy (who's completely adorable, btw). You showed leadership to your pup by stepping in and protecting him, and saved yourself from being the owner of a dog-aggressive dog. Collapsible asp? Sounds like a GREAT idea. I wonder if I could order one online. It would save my daughter the embarassment of "The Big Stick" Good for you for calling animal control. I would also call the police and tell them you felt threatened by an agressive dog who tried to bite you. The more fuss you make, the more likely it is something will be done about it.
it just pisses me off that i work so hard to socialize my dog so that he will not be aggressive towards other dogs (animals) and then some ass-clown owner can not handle their dog....
I don't blame you a bit for what you did. It's what I would have done, too.
Just wait until you get a dog doing that while the owner IS RIGHT THERE!
I was working with my pup once and had an owner with a dog that charged me and my pup, circling and growling and barking with hackles up...and when I told her to control her dog, she told me, "It's okay, he's friendly!!"
I told her that I wanted her dog away from mine immediately and she got defensive and said, "You obviously don't know anything about puppies...they need to be socialized with other dogs!" Yeah, okay. After calling her dog FIVE times, she finally had to come and grab him by the collar to haul him away. At that point I said, "You obviously don't know much about dogs...they need to know how to come when called!"

You did exactly the right thing. I am not one of those who thinks of my dog as my child, but I have been in the same situation you were in, did the same thing, & MAN did I feel like the mama bear!!

hi this is my first time here a great place..i just had the same thing happen to me and my 16 week old GS.the owner was present i had my gal leashed.i saw the dog from 50 yds thought he glanced at us me,my wife,my 9yr old son,and my female.i proceded(sic)?to the other side of the street.kept walking when dog went off leaving his yard fixed on my dog.by the way he had a retreving dummy in his mouth until middle of street so he came quiet but aggressive, dropped it then went off I was calm but assertive.I wasn't sure how far he would go,so i kicked the dummy out of my way. thats when super owner walks out and calls his dog..dog dosent listen right away..still fixed on pup..this guy says, dont kick him again.i just about blew a gasket.first thing i did not kick his dog.second who the hell is he givin orders at this point??!!at that moment i wanted dog aggreeive behavior and a full size dog..would have kept his runt busy while i sawed him in half!! anyway got that off my chest..will chose another street from now on..i have a ton of questions for you guys talk soon..
