You cannot always base your pup's growth on the parents. Sometimes you need to go further back. Case in point - ACD standard calls for males to be between 18-20 inches (35-45 pounds) and females 17-19. My young male's sire was 19 inches and the dam was 18 inches. However, I own a full brother to the sire and he is 21 inches. The grandsire was also oversized. The dam is from a kennel that is tranditionally larger in size. So out of two middle of the road parents I got a moose :-p 21.5 inches tall and 65 pounds.
Of course sometimes you just get an anomaly and get a pup that does not follow the course of its bloodline.
Depends on genetics, food, excercise etc. I personaly like small malinois and picked 2 small puppys they both turned out huge athletic beasts. My latest was the second smallest from the littre (smallest i didn't liked his attitude) and 4 weeks onwards he had outgrown his littermates and now he is the biggest of them all. bigger than his father and mother and every sibling i know
Ingrid, is that a link to your kennel? I have an 11 1/2 year old ACD and am getting a new puppy the first week of June. They are wonderfull dogs and it is good to see another ACD owner on the board. Any tips for a soon-to-be mommy? I have the crate ready....
Yes, that is my kennel :-) Good for you for getting the crate! Who are you getting your new puppy from? My best advice is consistency and patience - that and a whole lot of energy! A tired ACD is a good ACD :-p Are you on ACD-L? It is a good list made up of a mixture of breeders and owners. If you are interested in joining, I can get you the info.
I wanted to stay fairly local, I am getting her from Bendigo Kennels the Sacramento CA area. I have met the breeder and both parents. I searched for a while for breeders within driving distance of me (I am in northern CA) but only found about 5. Two never responded to me (in s. cal) and I didn't like the looks of one. I really liked the look of Cathie's dogs.
What is "ACD-L"? I guess I am not on it... I would definetly be intersted though. I just got my "8wks to 8mnths" DVD. I watched it last night and then loaned it to a coworker who has a 12 wk old gldn/lab puppy, and not a clue what to do. I fear I got it all wrong with my poor 11 1/2 year old girl..(until I found the "Dog Whisperer")..we both seem sooo much happier now, and I really want to do my best with the new puppy from the start.
Cathie is a great person! Tell her Ingrid says hi for me :-) You are getting one of Haha's puppies or Millie's? Haha is such a neat bitch. A good friend of mine got a puppy from her previous litter and he is a really neat dog. Don't know Millie but if she is anything like the rest of Cathie's dogs, I am sure she is really nice as well!
It is basically made up of people who have and/or love ACDs. Discussions vary and sometimes they get a tad lively but it is a great place to connect with 1000+ fellow ACD lovers. Every year they do "list shirts" that are always collectors items. Here are some past ones:
I am getting one of ICA's puppies. She's do April 8-11 and this will be her last breeding. It is to AM/CAN CH Dreamtime Armageddon "Bruce", a visiting stud from Michigan, I think. Who was the bitch that your friends dog came from and how long ago? How big is he now?
HaHa's puppies were a little too soon for me, but boy are they cute!! I got to see them when they were just starting to open their eyes, and the pitures on the webiste are adorbale. Of course, they are all sold now. I needed time (still do) to prepare and wanted a puppy after the rainy season since so much time is spent outside. I haven't seen Millie or her puppies yet, but their pictures should be on the website sometime after the 30th.
Thanks for the link. I have visited that site before, several times, in my research. I didn't realize they had a discussion board. The Tee's are adorable.
And I welcome ANY & ALL info you can give me about ACD's
