I'm relatively new to this forum, but am very interested in learning all I can. My husband and I adopted Bodo last August from the Military Working Dog Program at Lackland AFB. We were told he was too difficult to train, and that his bite was too shallow for the patrol work he was slated to be a part of. I'm a professional exotic animal keeper/trainer, and I believe EVERY animal can be trained, given enough patience and time. However, that being said, I can totally see where they are coming from. Bodo gets very excited (too excited) when in a training session, and gets 'scattered.' My husband and I love Bodo, but are also looking for a dog that can be trained more for personal protection work. So, we might be getting a new GSD puppy in the next few months (the litter we are currently looking at are due Feb. 18.) If there is an appropriate puppy in this litter, I'm sure we will be hanging out on this forum a lot looking for advice. Although I've trained everything from sloths to elephants, I've never trained a domestic dog - especially for protection work. In fact, I may be looking for a trainer in my area that would be open to letting me tag along and learn how to train while the dog is being trained.
Just wanted to introduce myself! How do I add a picture to this post?
He looks like such a sweet dog. Are you going to keep him if you get another GSD?
That sounds like a very interesting job you've got there. Don't know that I'd have the patience to train a sloth (that is if they learn as slowly as they move)!!
Welcome Kameron. Very cool job you have! Bodo is beautiful and looks very happy with you. How old is he - 1.5 yrs or a little more? With your experience, you'll probably be able to teach him to focus soon. You might want to peruse some of the Leerburg dog training DVD's on this site.
Welcome Kameron!
You've definitely come to the right place....this site has re-educated me and I thought I "knew" a few things when I first got here!(LOL) Your Bodo looks like a twin brother to the guy we recently rescued from Town Lake Animal Center in Austin TX.....how old is he? What a sweetheart in the picture! Good luck on your pup and Bodo, you'll find the best info on everything dog-related right here!
