I have used the search function and haven't found anything definitive that will work for my pup. Could be that I didn't find the right thread... here's the story.
The alarm goes off @ 0500-ish and Dobergirl starts whining in the crate to go outside... I would like to stop this whining so that I could let her out. I don't want her to think whining will get her what she wants. Also, she whines when I have put her in her crate and am getting her supper ready. This is driving me nuts! It's not a soft mewl by any means...
We have tried spray bottles, you must stand in her site with this method for it to constantly work.
We tried the loud rap on the top of the crate and firm "NO!". This averts for possibly five minutes.
I ordered an e-collar for training in the future and I also have the DVD that Ed makes. (I don't know exactly how comfortable I am using that tool for this issue.) Haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet... maybe there is something that I can't remember in the Puppy DVD...
Also, I am going to be searching out dog walking options for her in the middle of the day to tire her out some.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Cat
P.S.- Some months ago I came across a thread that addressed a similar problem with an ACD pup. Can anyone remember that thread or when it was posted?

I would:
1. Get her outside immediately at wake-up, before there is any opportunity for whining;
2. Never reward whining (as I know you already understand ), and for me, at least, I think I'd refrain from any attention to it, when it's the "let me out of the crate" whining. I'd ignore it 100%. She is getting some kind of reward or she would not continue to do it, I think.
3. Suppertime: The excited whining: I do not prepare food until the dogs are silent and sitting where they are supposed to sit while food prep is happening. In my house, this is under the table (so they are not underfoot). If anyone gets all excited and comes out or bounces around, I stop completely, give the place command, and wait until order is reigning again. (They are not perfect, but it was definitely a huge step forward when they realized that their dishes were on the counter and the food was out, ready to be put into the dishes, but that the process halted when the silent sit was broken. )
Do you say "no" or whatever you say for "stop whining" and then treat and praise instantly when she stops?
And you are definitely on the right track to give more exercise.

Teach the dog a shut up command, which requires teaching a speak command. I tell Lyka to shut up every morning n she lays back down with a reluctant cow-like groan But I know some dogs are just whiney by nature, I know a boxer pup like that, won't shut up, period. Most annoying pup ever. Now at 8 months old she is alot better but still kind of annoying
What Connie suggested is good too, but I would add a shut up command seperately, then when its solid you can incorporate it to your morning routine. I don't mind the cow-like groan both my dogs give me, but some days I feel like I'm sleeping in a barn with the weird noises they make

You ARE sleeping in a barn, if "barn" means housing for animals. What -- you thought it was YOUR house?

*sigh* Oh I know she doesn't like the snooze button. She's like a rooster with her whining.
To Mike and Connie, thanks for the advice... still figuring out the juggling act of single mom of kids and dogs, but it'll happen.
Hadn't thought about giving a treat. Biggest problem is consistancy(sp?) on my part of course. Gosh, I hope she gets me trained soon. j/k

Oh, the treat and praise when she obeys the "quiet" command will WAY speed up the learning process. When "quiet" on command earns an instant treat and whining earns zero....... guess which one she's gonna choose?

I have a talker, too...the only thing that has worked for us is to completely ignore the bad behavior...a "NO!" is still getting attention.
I agree with Connie...teaching a "quiet" command with treats will happen much quicker than trying to tell her "no" until she stops. "No" in the crate without a correction is not much of a reason to obey if all she wants is to be out of her crate.
It was and still is sometimes hard to tell when the whining is "I have to pee really bad" or "let me out! I want to bother you and knock stuff over!" ...but we are getting better at it and she's becoming more consistent in her noises so she's teaching us at the same time we're teaching her.

I agree with teaching the "quiet" or "shut up" as Mike S. said
Excellent point Mike M. A "no" is a correction and you have no way to get the pup to comply when he's in the crate.
I have to say I'll never use a squirt bottle with my pup again. Used it once to try and stop him from chewing his bedding in the crate and all it did was turn him ON (attack mode!). He did NOT like that.
